Many teams were uninspired to say the least. Whether it was disappointment at missing out on the playoffs (GA, Mich) or just that their last game was a bowl game that was a minor blip on the national radar.

The best effort, focus, energy seemed to be teams on the rise after some down years (TX , Fla, Kentucky).

Solution would be a 16 team playoff .  For those 16 team, the last game would at least be a shot at the national title and thus should produce everyone's best effort.

I don't agree with 16, 8 is enough IMO. With 16 you start getting into 3-4 loss teams... That's too many to get in if you didn't win your conference.

Eliminate conference championships and use that weekend to go from 16 to 8.

I know what fans want but what do the players want?  The next chapter in the turmoil of college football has already started. An increasing number of players are forgoing their senior year. Many are leaving without degrees. We complain when a player pulls out of a bowl game. Now their pulling out of a season.

I wish Sanders and his pals great success. We all know that most of them will have little money left 5 years after they play their final NFL game. That is the time they will wish they had a degree.

I’m not sure changing the bowl format will have an overall positive impact on the state of college football.

Why not 16.  Basketball has a 64 team bracket and creates a lot of excitement for all teams (knowing a win and you are still alive,  a loss and at least you had a chance to advance). In football only 4 have the opportunity so not the frenzy of excitment for the rest.

Eight would be fine.  The conference champs and a few other deserving teams.  Basketball teams play twice a week football once due to the physical attributes of the game.

The drop off in talent is to big from first to 16th. Like Roam said you’ll have 4 or 5 loss teams. 8 is enough. Did anybody else watch the show 8 is enough lol

Division III is glorified High School, not FBS

Southern:  drop off in talent from 2 to 3 is greater than drop off  from 3 to 16 (at least this year)

Roam: I agree that DIII is lesser football, but the old argument (not made by you) that the playoff season would be too long, the players miss too much class time and the logistics are a nightmare seems to be disproved.

The only obstacle I can see is the Bowl system and the $$

I disagree, Ohio st and Georgia have more talent than Clemson. Clemson has it made in the ACC because it is bad. Or are you talking about ND? I believe the Tide will beatdown Clemson in the championship game.

Southern,

Clemson has beat all comers so far  and this would be the same Georgia that lost to 4 loss Texas or the same Ohio State that lost to 7 loss Purdue

With 16 using today’s ranking I believe people would tune in for Clemson/Texas or WV/Bama or other matchups if they had meaning for bowl games. Players never feel like they’ll lose in a playoff game.  It’s be a better atmosphere than two teams fighting for their luggage.

So true Bill, I've been saying for years that there are too many bowl games - I still remember when there were only about a dozen or so, and only the true top teams made them.  6 wins earns a bowl spot ... puullleeeaaazzzzeeeee!  Should be 8 wins or more, c'mon.  I'm sure they make money off of them, but watching a game in a stadium that holds 65k and only seeing 20k in the seats just doesn't seem right.  If the game truly had meaning .. aka ... playoff, those stadiums would be full and they would be making more money - don't understand why they're fighting this idea.

I don't really care about rewarding 4 loss teams because "people will watch". I'd rather they be deserving.

Just sayin, if they gonna have 30 bowl games at least make them meaningful.  It would make for better play, better watching, better matchups, kids wouldn’t be so quick to skip them if they had meaning to team. Don’t see kids in top four leaving early

I'd rather keep the regular season more meaningful than late December. 0,1, and maybe 2 losses the regular season still means a lot. Once you are in 3 and 4 loss territory IMO a lot of the drama is gone.

I agree Roam keep the lust on the regular season that’s why conference championships are so important.

The Citrus Bowl is a perfect example of my point:

PSU comes in a little disapointed in their season, playing a lower ranked(regarded) team, in a lesser bowl than they had hoped. Win or lose - doesn't matter much.

KU comes in elated with their season, playing a higher ranked team, in a great bowl for them. They are excited, energetic and ready to play. Win over PSU and their stock goes up.

If the game is part of the playoffs - a much different PSU team shows up.

Playing for seeding does keep the regular season important.  even more important. if you're a 2 loss team with 3 games left, you want to remain a 2 loss team.  With nothing to play for but pride, they don't play as hard. After that second loss you can see the wind knocked out of a team......but if they knew they were playing for seeding you might not see as many 3-4 loss teams.

I don't agree, I've seen plenty of two loss teams playing hard at the end of the year. I don't buy it, but it's just my opinion.

ok.   But I know in HS, playing for seeding is VERY important and I see teams play hard for those top seeds

Keep the conference championship game but award with a bye. Seed the other teams based on power rankings and no FCS win counts towards wins. Or kill conference championship, start rankings after regular season game #5 based on strength of schedule/power rank, and no FCS wins count regardless of time of year played. Playoff games to be played on home field and Championship game can alternate between Cotton, Rose, Orange, Sugar and Fiesta or come up with different regional venues e.g. N, S, E, W.
