He did indeed want to keep Barnes but there were certain stipulations and expectations that came with it and Barnes' ego got in the way.
At first i was bummed that he was leaving. Check out the DL's stats for the 3 years that Barnes was the coach. That and the fact that he wiffed on some recruits that he shouldnt have is pretty telling. Upon further review, I think we can do better.
What kind of stipulations, stats/game etc tied to contract?
@psu61: MC wanted to see improvement from Barnes in his recruiting as well as the way the recruits were coached. I heard something behind the scene happened with Chaz Coleman which led to his entering the portal.
In the 3 years that Barnes has been in charge of the DL, their overall stats have declined. The stars of the players didnt match the expected results that were achieved.

There have been a few guys that haven’t lived up to expectations including DDS.
Barnes seemed like an emotional hire by Franklin - more about his friendship with the players than for his ability. @brownale Yep. You'd have thought Franklin would have tried to poach the whole freakin' coaching staff....if they were all that & a bag of chips.
