I’m starting to believe ain’t any of these games going to be easy to win. We dominated Illinois but only win 21-7. The defense is killing it but they gotta clean up these stupid penalties man. We have a kick ass defense especially when #11 is playing LB’R get his butt back there full time. The offense is very good but we need to get TD’s because I don’t trust that kicker. He’s gotta good leg he just ain’t accurate he needs some confidence in himself. That was a good win last night Illinois is better than I thought and we still won by 2 TD’s. Just get out with a win and keep getting better every game and we’ll be okay. 4-0 baby

Yep, 4-0, it can't get any better that!  I was really impressed with our OL & the running game.  Allen & Singleton are bruising runners and churning out the yardage.  Warren continues to amaze me.  Is there anything he can't do?  Maybe he can kick FG's, lol!  I just wish our D would play a complete game.  Slow starts aren't going to cut it with the games we have coming up.  All in all, if we eliminate the stupid penalties & keep improving, this can be a special season!

Southern, I agree; it was "a good win."  The strengths that Illinois showed in their first 4 games were negated and that is attributable to thorough preparation and in-game adjustments.  That is a positive reflection on the coaches and the players.

I think #15 played a good game but missed a couple of opportunities due to hesitancy.  His hesitance was no doubt due to the fact that Illinois came into the game with 7 interceptions.   In the final 42 seconds of the first half, Illinos was completely committed to stopping the pass.  It looked like a simple hand-off or dump-off to a running back would have resulted in a big gain and a chance to get out-of-bounds.  In the 4th QTR, Illinois was playing to stop the running back.  There were a few times when #15 should have kept the ball.

The penalties are maddening.  It is good to see that #5 finally learned to stop pushing off and to allow the defenders to run into him.  But the Penn State "deepers" keep getting called for pass interference or holding or unsportsmanlike conduct.

Franklin's coaching decisions are sometimes baffling.  Your kicker is having problems, you have a 4th down inside the 20, you want to go up by 2 scores ---- that seems like a good opportunity to get the kid some confidence.  Later in the game, Franklin sends the kicker out for a 41-yard attempt instead of trying to convert and the predictable happens.

@tae-buetel  oh yeah i agree. The Illinois HC is a defensive minded coach he was the DC for Wisconsin back in the day when Wisconsin was great on defense if I remember correctly. I believe Illinois is better than the credit they get and we really dominated the game. James Franklin should’ve went for the throat on 4th and 1 and he punted that was a terrible decision because a first down right there changed the momentum of the game. Franklin has to do better in these situations.

Unfortunately, what you have been seeing is what you will be seeing; hard for someone to break natural tendency when repeatedly facing the same situation; hard to get out of your comfort zone; that's why some coaches can't win the big one consistently; they are not wired for it, the team isn't built for it; human nature.

Allar threw 21 passes and only 6 were incomplete. For the most part, he did very well, and is light years ahead of where he was last year.

@roaminglion

Roam, I am just spitballing with ya here.

Allar was a back up to Clifford. Right then and there I think we should have all wondered a little bit. Last year Allar had some good days and he had some very bad days.  We can blame the Oline and anything else that comes to mind, but Allar did not set the world on fire.  Yes, he looks much better this year, but we have to also look at the schedule so far this year....which is really not that strong at all.  7-0 at the end of the 1st quarter against Kent State? The last top 10 team Kent State played this year was up 37-0 at the of the 1st Quarter (Vols).

With that said, I am not picking on Allar, I think the overall performance of this team is scary after the the first 4 games.  The playing calling and decision making last night was very questionable.  I am certain Ohio State would have put that game away by halftime! I honestly think Penn State should have won that game by 40 points.

The way I see it today, Penn State is going to lose two games....USC on the road and Ohio State at home.  I think USC is going to take Michigan's spot this year and be the "other" team that JF just can't beat. I am losing faith in JF quickly.  He is a good recruiter and recruits good players....just not an Elite coach.  He is going to win a lot of games, games against teams he should win, and he will take Penn State to bowl games.  He will help bring in money to support the Penn State athletic programs, but he isn't going to win National Championships the way he coaches. We have waited 11 years to make the college playoffs under him, this year the field has expanded to 12 and if he loses to both, USC and Ohio State, I am not sure Penn State will even get the nod with an expanded field.

I expected more from this team by now! I kind of figured we would be 5-0 after the UCLA and game we should be.  I just didn't expect to see a game like we did against BG - who I thought might be better than we expected until they lost to Old Dominion. I didn't expect Penn State to only be up 7-0 at the end of the first quarter against Kent State and I POSITIVELY didn't expect Illinois - just like BG - to drive down the field and take 7-0 lead against us....at home, an UNOFFICIAL WHITE OUT GAME and with a fan base rocking a stadium like no other!

They best be firing on all 8 cylinders against UCLA and put this game away by end of the first quarter and look like the #7 team in the country they are supposed to be! They struggle next weekend at home, you can bet on Ohio State destroying them in front of 110K fans! As for USC, Penn State will be an underdog in this game as well and I don't think USC is a great team AT ALL! Sure they, hung with Michigan in the BIG HOUSE, but that place didn't seem to phase Texas at all! And it didn't seem to phase Minnesota too much who only lost there by 3 too.

I don't enough to comment on Day's ability, but what he ( or they ) are doing with Howard as their first year starter is amazing.  This kid didn't have 2 years of experience with this Ohio State offense and he is getting it done!  Makes me question what JF & CO is doing with Allar.

We are 4-0 against two bad teams and two ok teams and we nearly lost to one of those bad teams.  Just keep this in mind.

GO STATE!!!!

We gotta get better scoring TD’s. We dominated Illinois but only scored 21 points but we do have a new OC. Oregon has a good football team and they’re struggling to score and is barely squeaking by getting wins. This is just where we are in college football today but we’re playing lights out on defense when #11 is playing LB’r and I dang noticed that last Saturday night. This defense we have is very good and they’re about to get nasty good just wait and see. Michigan can’t throw the football and they beat USC because USC stinks on defense and they couldn’t block Michigans DL from the few plays I watched. Illinois was 4-0 Saturday like roam said they’re pretty good not great but good and we flat dominated their offense and really their defense we just ain’t scoring because we don’t stick to the run but that might be by design until we get into the beef of the schedule. Man Ohio St doesn’t have a good win yet imo. Let’s see what happens against UCLA.

I agree with you on the Ohio State schedule thus far.  They play Iowa at home this week and then Oregon on the road the following week.  We will get a better idea how good they really are after this two game stretch.

Yes, we have a new OC but he is NOT new to the game.  I, along with some others who DO know football way better than me, also thought some of the play calling was very questionable again.....especially in week 5 of the season.

Southern, I want to see them win every game too, but I just don't know if that will happen under JF...this year or any year.  I just don't think he knows how to compete with the Elite teams and coaches.

GO STATE!

Kotelnicki is the next Manny Diaz just this time a OC, enjoy your time with him because it won’t be long. His reputation precedes him for good reason and a large program will come knocking after a few seasons so I hope we can maximize his talents while we have him here unless JF departs (cough cough Florida) and he somehow elevates to HC. USC is a good team no doubt about it but their tackling against UM was horrendous and they can be gouged by the run. We can’t win a shoot out against Riley and Miller Miss but Penn State has a better QB than UM and we have a 1 2 punch in the backfield that could easily win that game if we avoid costly penalties and the D contains. OSU has a nasty stretch coming up which could play to PSUs favor especially home field advantage. There are other forces at play that dictate what kind of Ohio State we see, fired up on a winning streak or wounded animal from Nebraska and Oregon.

Man o Day, you have to really dig deep into this one!

Washington is only 8 points down from being 5-0

They lost to Rutgers ( 4-0 ) on the road by 3....Rutgers beat VaTech on the road and VaTech almost beat #8 Miami in the last second. So Rutgers is probably being considered an above average team and Washington losing to them doesn't look too bad.

They also lost to Washington State by 5.  BUT, Washington State is 4-1 and their only loss is to #25 Boise St on the road.  Washington State did beat beat Texas Tech who is 4-1.  Texas Tech beat Cincy who is 3-2, but they could easily be 5-0.....they lost to Pitt by 1 and Pitt is 4-0.  And Cincy only lost to Texas Tech by 3 on the road.

Texas Beat Michigan on the road 31-12 and they beat Mississippi State ( 1-4) 35-13.  Both, Michigan and Mississippi State had a similar loss to Texas.....hmmm? Is Michigan and Mississippi State a toss up if they played head on? LOL

Washington has only given up 9 points on average at home and scores 26 points on average at home. Michigan is giving up 18 points on average at home and scoring 28 points at home on average. They have yet to play on the road this year. Michigan by far has the best win beating USC, but how good is USC? USC DID beat LSU, but LSU had to come from behind to beat South Carolina in the closing minutes of their game or they would have 2 losses this year.

So they way I see it, they think Michigan and Washington are not TOO far apart and since this game is at Washington, they are giving Washington the home field advantage of 3 points.

GO STATE!!!

PS:  Kind of like the Moneyball scenario! All comes down to numbers.  Michigan gets on base and so does Washington.  Washington just doesn't let as many of their competition on base, so I like Washington in the upset!

I have to say I was surprised by our ability to run against IL.

KS 186 Rushing suggested they could be run against

NE 48 Yards rushing when they were leading at half told the opposite story.

PSU 239 Yards rushing.  Why?  There were some nice holes at times but often we were getting 5 yards when there didn't look to be much of a gap.  OL holding blocks and getting to second level?  Clearly the backs can run and are maturing...letting blocks develop and making good decisions.

Two dimensional is nice and I the IL game makes me think we can be balanced against the XPAC10 teams.  Warren demands attention which helps everyone.

Singleton is a MONSTER and the longer this season goes on, the more he is going to tear it up! Heck, I don't even think he needs an Oline anymore! LOL

Allen is just down right good! He doesn't look powerful, but he is quick, holds on to the ball and has great speed too....and is very smart!

I don't know if these guys are the best in the business, but they are definitely top Executives!

That’s because their hometown refs won’t be traveling with them.

It's fascinating to hear how much you agonize about refs, SEC, ESPN bias. Your toxic mindset is bad for the sports culture.

I’ve said it over and over but Singleton should be the feature back in my opinion. Allen is good but every time Singleton touches the ball there’s a chance he’s gonna take it to the house.

@psujoe  Both RB’s are good but singleton is better and the dude keeps getting better every game. Singleton is a beast and he should be the starter going forward. He did start last week.

Singleton was absent from practice. Franklin wouldn't comment on his status. Was he injured last week? I don’t recall

I'm pleased with the way we're using Singleton & Allen.  Don't care who "starts".  Keep their carries pretty even as long as they're both moving the chains.  It makes sense to keep their legs fresh and tire out the opposing D.  Also it's to their benefit for their futures at the next level.  Lessens the risk of injury and keeps the mileage on their odometer low which is attractive to NFL scouts.
