The new way of building a roster is going to be doing well in HS recruiting, but kicking butt in the portal. Look at Clemson, always did well recruiting but Dabo refused to dip into the portal and they took a nose dive.
Every team at the top has suceeeded there. HS recruiting is important yes... but now it is not only a crap shoot if they will be good, it's also a crap shoot you can keep them anyway.
Portal is the new normal. It's not a coincidence that the past 2 NC games featured 4 QBs who were 1 year transfers

I couldn't agree with you more Roam...It's all about the portal and the NIL...This is professional football with 1 year contracts and every kid is a free agent and available after every season...The successful teams will be the ones with the best scouting departments, cap management and willingness to spend...The price of fielding a competitive team is getting higher and higher and those willing to spend will be the ones who will be winning football games...There is no reason that Penn State shouldn't be one of those teams at the top of the tier list...

I have been saying the same thing for years...Winning and that includes winning the big games is all they have to do...When this program starts doing that the big time recruits and portal guys will come...They gotta win those big games...ESPN just did a fluff piece gassing him up...For me it's all talk...This is a performance business...All anyone cares about at the end of the day is winning...He has the schedule to win this year...He should at worst lose a game this regular season and that should be enough to get him into the B1G title game and a playoff slot...That will be his opportunity to beat these big time programs which is something Franklin couldn't do...I will say this...Culture is an important component to accomplishing these things but you need some talent too along with a coaching staff that puts it's players in a position to succeed...This is going to be a very interesting season...

With the level of recruit we’re going after and getting we’re gonna need the portal bad and we’re gonna need a lot more than Iowa State transfers.
This link shows who we’re competing with for our big diamond in the rough under the radar commits. I haven’t been impressed at all with the level of guys we’re recruiting or signed from the portal. Iowa State isn’t gonna fly in the B1G.
Here is my biggest concern regarding this head coach...He may know this or he may not I really don't know but he is going to find out very quickly that there is a big difference between coaching at Iowa State and Penn State...At Iowa State they always came in with underdog expectations as for the most part they were competing against the Oklahoma's and Texas's of the world and little else in that conference until they defected to the SEC...From that point on their big games were BYU, Houston, Arizona State and TCU...Lets just say the B1G ain't the Big 12...To me that is like going from AA to the Big Leagues...These fluff pieces about him bringing back the former players, opening up his office, making his office smaller to accommodate a larger team room and the whole 2nd floor thing, the culture change etc...is all terrific and shocking to me that the only reason anybody was called up to the 2nd floor was for disciplinary measures is shocking to me...There definitely was a deficiency regarding coach to player communication and openness which to me is quite striking and troubling at the same time...These things all matter and are crucial to building a team...Things have changed significantly since my time playing but to have a coach that aloof and negligent to the history of a program is stunning to me...Franklin's lack of awareness to utilize the rich and storied history of the program for it's benefit is nothing short of stupidity...That being said you still need a level of talent to compete and I am really concerned that even though Campbell is apparently doing all of the right things off the field with the program he is at some point going to need to bring in the talent and right now that concerns me...Heart, guts and grit only goes so far because at the end of the day talent is a necessary part of this equation and as of now he ain't bringing in any of these big time targets and that has to change for the program to jump to the next level...I believe winning will solve this issue and this season is going to be big...They gotta win this year especially with the schedule they were gifted...They lose more than 1 game this regular season and the program is in trouble...Truthfully they shouldn't lose a regular season game but I will put Michigan on the road as the only loss that would be acceptable (even though in my gut no loss is acceptable) but I will give em that one...That would put them in the B1G championship game and get them in the CFP...We shall see...I am gonna keep my big mouth shut and see what happens...
I have Washington as a definite loss and think they’re gonna be pretty darn good.

USC at home is going to give us a good litmus test as to what the team is...Washington on the road is going to be a tough ballgame as well...They have 3 competitive ballgames this season...USC at home with Michigan and Washington on the road...They gotta win 2 out of 3 of those ballgames...Like I said this ain't the Big 12...I am gonna keep my big mouth shut...My commentary will happen after the regular season...Like I said earlier Rocco needs to keep his mouth shut and get to work gelling with his receiving corps and studying tape instead of popping off about the previous coaching staff and administration...
If he wins those ballgames all will be happy in happy valley...He loses those ballgames it will be interesting to see what the narrative is at that time...We will see what people will be complaining about then...It's all about wins...Lets see if he can deliver...Say what you want but Franklin won 10 games a year...At the end of the season it will be interesting to see what the narrative is...
@psujoe why would Washington be a definite loss homer? We’re not losing to Washington. Y’all gotta give the man a chance. This recruiting cycle this year is for 2 or 3 years down the road we loaded up with the best players Iowa St had and added them to the studs we had. 95% of the teams out there would love to be in MC shoes right now adding the players we did from Iowa St. we didn’t get the 20 worst players we got the 20 best players they had including the 5th year starting QB. I’m basing my opinion on if the QB is healthy ready to play game one. I believe we’re going to have a solid football team 11-1 regular season playing in the big 10 championship game. This is a new era DA, Jim Knowles and JF are gone thank GOD 😂
