Shut up about this Southern. The US has gone back in time too much lately. Let's not do it again. By the way these people are not ready to die for their country yet every time there is a war many of those killed are in the 18 to 20 years old range. (cue clueless for a right wing rant).

@psugrad81 how have we gone back in time? If you ain’t old enough to drink you definitely ain’t old enough to vote. I don’t see anything right wing about the post.

Well if you don't know how we went back in time it's probably because you get all your news from fox like news outlets. There was nothing in your message that was right wing. I never said there was. I should have said cue Klueless for a right wing rant. I was anticipating a right wing response, from another poster on this forum, to my response to you. In much of the US, the drinking age is 18, however, I don't think the right to drink should have any tie in to the right to vote.

Well, if you are gonna say that then... why are you ignoring how an 18yo is old enough to enlist and serve in the US military?

You telling me you're cool with denying someone in the Army, who is serving this country with honor, the right to vote?

I don’t make the rules but I try to follow the rules it’s just my personal opinion that it would be better for the country if there was an age limit of 21 to vote.

I’ve had a change of heart. You can’t vote until you’re 21 unless you’re in any branch of military. I agree military personnel should be able to vote.

So a 20 year old has to give up college and enlist just to vote? Or the 19yo electrician apprentice working 60 hours a week to pay his bills? They can't vote?

Nonsense.

@roaminglion yes but I thought voting was a privilege not a right. It can be taken from you like your driver license, right?

I’m not for taking anybody’s voting rights just saying I believe 18 is too young to vote.

No, it is a right enshrined in certain amendments of the Constitution. For example: The voting age of 18 years old is set by the 26th amendment, so the only way to "change" it is another amendment. Just like owning a gun is a right set by the 2nd amendment... you can change that too, but it would require an amendment as well.

In very limited circumstances can a right be "taken" from you. For example: being put in prison in some states can deny you the right to vote. Again, this is similar to how felons aren't allowed to purchase guns in many states (Even these examples have been, and probably will again, been fought in court as unconstitutional). Another example is "free speech", which is also enshrined in the Constitution... however you can't slander people or threaten to kill people. There are limits.

All that said, the point is you can't just pass a law to change the voting age, it's a specific right written in the Constitution.

@roaminglion  you know I was just saying, I don’t believe they’d ever raise the voting age to 21 because it would be political suicide.

Well now you know it is a right, not merely a privilege

@kularrow If I'd have stayed in to get 2 hash marks, I'd have ended up being another alcoholic Jarhead.
