Anyone have one in their yard? Wondering what kind of luck you have with them. How tall did they get, how thick in diameter, years long.
My kid has a couple. Unfortunately the most interesting ones aren't all that hardy up here (zone5b/6a). His have been in the ground 20+ yrs and are waist/chest high, 2-3" at the base. There's a huge range of mature sizes, many leaf types and colors. Some are reasonably prices, others are $$$. If you invest in a high $ tree, make sure it's guaranteed to grow for a year. 1st winter is the toughest for them. Wouldn't hurt to mulch the base the 1st winter, but also make sure you take the much off in the spring. Maples don't like their roots smothered.
If you have a local nursery, you can go shopping, see what they have. Or there are online nurseries that specialize in Japanese maples, better selection, but smaller trees. Haven't seen too many that are over 20' tall and most stay under 10. I like the really serrated, ferny leaves ones. lol That and the ones that look like an Indica marijuana leaf. Leaves and be reds, greens, funky yellow and some combinations of colors.
Good luck, waaay to many to choose from. The kid's haven't been bothered by deer, but not sure it it would hold true if they weren't right beside the house.

Thanks.
That's the thing. So many different classifications and characteristics. That's why I reached out. Still learning and calling around to different nurseries.
All I want is something that won't exceed 6 feet, non evasive roots. Small trunk line. I'm in the northeast, climate zone 5, 5A.
I've been told you can reach out to State college or any College and inquire to aborists. They would be happy to help.
I have 2 and mine are about 7 or 8 feet

I'm sure you have great climate conditions down there in the south. Not much worries. Up here we contend with frost.
We don't see stable weather until May. Basically, we only have 4 months of summer. May, June, July, August.
@jimmy-v Yep, looking at Japanese maples is kinda like going to the beach when you were an unattached teenager; so many options, so many you'd like to get to know better. Tough to choose.
