a 4 time PIAA Champ (84-0 career record).
Did he wrestle for Lock Haven??
@t-hale I looked it up and saw this. 4 timer...that is an amazing accomplishment. I'm glad you posted this T-Hale, Mr. Johnson is deserving of the acknowledgment. (BTW, I had to cut and paste the writing from a National Wrestling Hall of Fame article, apparently the algorithm that monitors this site thought the link was spam).
1958 Mike won his first of four PIAA State Championships while wrestling for Lock Haven High School. Mike was one of four PIAA Champions for Hall of Fame Coach Bud Stehman. This has only happened twice since with North Allegheny and Northampton. He ended his high school career with a record of 84-0 and was never taken down. He wrestled at Pitt for Rex Peery and it has been said that during his scholastic years Mike perfected the "duck under" takedown. Mike's First coaching position was at Shady Side Academy, a position that he left after one year. In 1969 he became an assistant coach at DuBois Area High School until 1974 when he became the head coach. During his years as head coach he had 14 District IX Champions and 8 PIAA Qualifiers. In 1980 Mike went back to being an assistant coach a position he held until 2004. He was responsible for the off season strength and conditioning program as well as the elementary wrestling program. He has served as an outstanding clinician for some of the best wrestling camps on the East Coast.
84-0 against the competition up there is amazing. Just to win a state championship in Pa you have to be a bad ass and do it 4 times and 84-0 smh lol
During the Rose Bowl we hope to see y’all Lake we’ve got a chance to win 11 games and beat a top 10 team in their backyard. Personally I don’t think Utah can block our DL brother we get after the QB. Man the running game is finally clicking we’ve got 2 stud RB’s but it should be a good game.
@southern-psu-fan Thanks Southern, actually there is a 75% chance I will be going to the Rose Bowl. Its been on my (and wife's) bucket list. And yes, wrestling in Pennsylvnia has always been super competitive especially in the 50's. The Lock Haven area and Lock Haven State Teacher's college as it was known in the day has always been a pivot for Pennsylvania wrestling.
Man I just found out my high school wrestling coach passed away. He wrestled at APP State and man he was a great man he was ole southerns hero. 63 years old and he was in great shape. He was still lifting heavy weights. We’ve kept in touch and text each others at least once or twice a month. I text him right after Christmas and never heard anything back and now I know why because he always answers me and I always answered him. This is the only thing I do I’m not on social media a friend told me he was found dead on January 4 by his daughter May Jesus bless and comfort her. This hit me like a sledgehammer man but the good news is, Jehovah God has him and I will see him again…thank you Lord Jesus
Sorry for your loss. It’s amazing the impact coaches have on their athletes. Coaching is a great profession.
