I found this on another forum and felt it was too good not to share. It's not my work, but rather the work of someone that has been around wrestling for MANY years:
In the past 40 years:
The #1 seed has won the title 53% of the time
The #2 seed 23% of the time
The #3 seed 10%
The #4 seed 4%
Seeds 5-8 8%
Seeds 9+ 2%
Here's the cool part:
CS's years at PSU:
64 total All Americans.....
- 15 were seeded #1 and 13 won it all; the other two came in 2nd
- 15 were seeded #2 and 7 won it all, 5 placed 2nd, 2 placed 3rd and 1 DNP
other PSU seeds that won are: 3rd (5) 5th(1) 9th(1)
Of the 64 AA's: 28 did better than their seed, 14 did worse, and 22 equaled their seed.
We've had an unseeded wrestler finishing 7th, a #9 seed winning a ship, a #10 seed finishing 2nd and a 15th seed finishing 7th
As i remember someone thought the program was embarrassing because we forfeited a few matches.
That data would be seen as a statistical outlier. Somehow CS prepares these wrestlers to perform at a significantly high level when it matters, as defined by Nationals.

If how we went about winning 8 of the last 10 National Championships is embarrasing, sign me up for more embarrasment.

Forfeiting has become an issue that college coaches want to address especially the medical forfeits where it is clearly done to obtain a better seed at the Nationals. I am still scratching my head when we forfeited a weight class to Arizona State a few years ago which resulted in losing that dual and ending an impressive win streak. It’s hard for me to understand how the best team during that last decade could not fill all the weight classes that night.

You’re still bringing up a forfeit from 2019 when Shak was rehabbing an ACL tear and his backup apparently failed a pre match skin check?Seriously?
@lionbacker99 I’ll give up a forfeit every now and then to win all the NC’s Cael has won 😂
I get it. You guys worship Cael. Cool. Still forfeiting is a bad look. There were bodies available to fill in. Clifford goes dow, a a sun is put in. We best Arizona State is someone went out there and didn’t get pinned.
It cool. Don’t get you bloomers in an uproar. I’m old school and as long as I have a final breath, I’ll battle till the end.
@sky the dude is winning NC’s snake. You can find more reasons to hammer Nick Saban than you can Cael Sanderson 😂 just win baby

Imagine insinuating the dude who never lost a college match, won a gold medal at the Olympics, and has 9 National Titles as head coach of Penn State doesn't "battle to the end". LMAO
In Sky's defense and I assume he's an old fart like me, this was unthinkable in the old days. You put out your best team for every dual, every tournament, every time. Your coachs fought for seeds but as they say, you have to win every match to be a champion.
Times have changed though and as Bill Mahar would say...these are the new rules.....duals not important, forfeit a match to protect seeding, conference tournament not as important, punt a year by redshirting your best wrestlers to stack the deck for the next year. These are proven strategies that pay off big time come NCAA time. I'm good with that.
@lakerie Agree, but this isn’t the situation he is complaining about. He’s complaining about PSU not having a 3rd string option on a cross country dual meet in November 2019 when the wrestler who was expected to fill the spot was unexpectedly disqualified from competition due to failing a pre match skin check. It wasn’t Cael’s choice to forfeit, it was an unfortunate turn of events. However, if sky wants to chip in with a large donation so PSU can fly across 3 time zones with a 3 deep roster for a dual meet, I applaud him. I’m sure Cael would be ok with it also. I’m pretty sure football teams don’t take the full roster on the road, much less the wrestling team who is a non revenue generating sport. I’m sure Cael is losing sleep at night over one “fan” being embarrassed.

"you baby I clue" 🤔 🤔 🤔 🤔
So if the first string and second string and third string QB get hurt, will the coach throw i the towel?

This comparison is so stupid, considering you are trying to say forfeiting an entire football game is equivalent to forfeiting 1/10 of a wrestling match you've already won.
We actually lost 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣
But out of conference dual meets don't really mean anything in wrestling, if I am not mistaken. More like a "friendly" in soccer than anything else. The wrestling posters can elaborate or correct me if I'm wrong on that.
My mistake for saying we won, but it's not like football where a single loss takes you out of the championship.
@roaminglion BULLSHIT!!! Seriously dude, if you dont know what you're taking about just sit in the corner and STFU!!! Anyone who's ever put in the time, the blood, the sweat, the tears to wrestle knows that every match means something. There's no such thing as a match that "doesnt mean anything". You train to win. Each time. Every time.
Lake,99,: You both nailed it!! Sky hasnt said who he proposes should have went out to face ZV in that dual. There are plenty of reasons why we lost that dual, only a fool would blame it all on that forfeit.

Ummm... I was using the term generally, not specifically. You seriously need to chill out dude. I even said it's "More like a "friendly" in soccer than anything else". If you knew soccer, you'd know that's saying it's very hotly contested, the players try their best in the match, but ultimately the match doesn't mean anything IN REGARDS TO STANDINGS OR CHAMPIONSHIPS. It's laughable you are trying to insinuate I meant D1 athletes didn't train hard or somehow didn't care. Please, how about you STFU on that nonsense.
Yeah, I played D1 sports too. Two sports for Penn State actually, so that rhetoric about "anyone who's ever put in the time". Yeah, I have.
So next time maybe try to understand what someone is saying, rather than just go looking for some BS invented slight about wrestlers not training hard for a match. My lord man, you're just looking for sh*t to complain about now. All I meant is it didn't matter in the grand scheme of Big Ten championships or a National Championships. There were no implications for those, only that it was a competitive match with no real meaning other than pride. WHICH IS EXACTLY WHAT A FRIENDLY IS IN SOCCER
@roaminglion Look asshole, dont come on a wrestling forum and pretend to know what you're talking about. Yeah, we all know you supposedly ran track for PSU......just another of your many bullshit stories you try to feed us.
In your own words you said "But out of conference meets dont really mean anything in wrestling". That is complete and utter bullshit. You're once again talking out your ass and trying to put a spin on it. Just stop man.

You are quite simply the biggest snowflake I've ever come across in my life. My lord, everything is some sort of slight or offense to you. FFS man, keep tilting at windmills.
Look up what a friendly is in soccer you complete and utter douchebag. You'll see it's exactly what I said it was, my god you're such a effing whiney little b*tch.
'Tilting at windmills', that is a Don Quixote reference. Boy that book is a tough read, kind of like this thread.
I have not done the research but with who Cael had traveling I don't know that he had someone available to fill the spot and wouldn't have given up 5 or 6 to ZV. Maybe we could have sent out someone that would wrestle up 1 or 2 weights. I hate losing any dual and we could have one that one but the stars didn't align. That being said we 'made the playoffs' and won the big prize.
I see extra wrestlers at duals where we are visitors but it is clear we don't travel 2 people in every weight? How many typically travel?
