risk his reputation, earnings and future employability by firing JF when he did?
Either:
1. He was ordered to by those above him (maybe in response to JF's contract extension demand)
or
2. He had a firm commit from his top prospect and wanted rid of a disgruntled JF.
The timing also gave PSU (and the new coach) 2 months to sort out everything. Now they have a feel for who is leaving (staff and players).
