Because they don't practice it and i am not even sure if any of our QBs have ever done it. Even in HS they play shotgun
Honestly I just think it's an excuse for ineffective execution. A bunch of other teams like Clemson and Alabama also do it.

I don't see it as an excuse, Roam. If what you're doing ain't working (which it isn't), the sensible thing is to try something else. At least that would seem logical.

Then practice it! Even if they didn't do it in HS, I'm sure they're smart enough to learn how to do it. Â

How much valuable time do you take away from the offense to practice a short yardage play the other teams don't seem to need? My point is if Clemson and even Alabama use the shotgun for short yardage, is it really the formation that's the problem or out OL?
When you do something you don’t practice or run much you fumble the ball like on the option play we ran on a short yardage play. It looked like a Paul Johnson play gone bad lol

Roam, I assume they still take valuable practice time to practice the 2 min. drill. IMO the short ydg situation comes up in a game at least as often, if not more frequently than theneed for a 2 min offense. Getting a critical 1st down in short yardage situations seems pretty important to me.

That makes so much sense!! I would also love to see them go back to using a fullback!
@psujoe. It ain’t gonna happen, it’s not the offense. I’m not so sure they want the center practicing it either it will mess with his snaps. If we did start taking snaps under center I’m telling ya you will see more fumble snapping the ball rather it’s under center or shotgun. If y’all notice we don’t ever have any problems snapping the ball anymore because the timing is there and that’s what they are comfortable doing. You throw snapping the ball under center in there a few times a game it will look like that stupid option we tried to run yesterday that turned the ball over.
@roaminglion they are successful we are not, if it doesn't work fix it, if you don't want to fix it after 6 years get out of here we don't want youÂ
@southern-psu-fan other teams practice both but it is too complicated for Penn State maybe we should bring in better recruits then.
@cohappy. I believe our center was a 5* recruit it ain’t going to get much better. Roam is right buddy it’s just more things to take up time in practice but the bottom line is we don’t have a snapping problem, we have a QB problemÂ

With all due respect Southern, we have a short yardage problem!
The problem is there isn’t an o lineman that can put the guy in front of him on his can so that a back can run over em’ for short yardage.Â

Then put Levis under center and he can use his 235 lbs to push the lineman into the guy in front of him,

fixing it and doing something completely different are two different things.
Â
Roam, sometimes doing something completely different is the fix. Especially if you've been doing the status quo for quite awhile and haven't been able to make it work.

Well, if I remember right with Donovan we were under center and still sucked at short yardage. So again, I don't think it's the formation it's just the line sucks and we don't get push.
Many teams, and most of the best teams, use the same style in short yardage in are successful.

I whole heartedly agree and if a 235 lb qb with the push of two linemen can’t get it, then I dunno!

If they can't fix something so simple it's not a QB problem it's a coaching problem.
@roaminglion. Barkley, sanders and brown didn’t have a problem running the ball even Cain had some success when he was not hurt. It’s like you said roam, we have a QB problem and we’re weak at the RB position and the turnovers are killing us on offense.

It's amazing how a good QB / RB can make the line look better. Remember how different things looked last year every time Brown or Cain was in the backfield?
@roaminglion exactly right Roam. This in my opinion was the perfect storm to have a bad season having 3 new coaches, lose our best LB’s and we lost our 2 best RB’s. When you think about that for a minute we all could be overreacting look what happened to Ohio st when Pryor got kicked off the team Ohio st with 5* players everywhere at almost every position even at backup QB and they go 6-7. It’s just one of those seasons where nothing has gone our way. And wasn’t Luke Fickel the fill in coach a coach that was very familiar with the team?
