The rules for the expanded playoff were finalized on December 1st, and this is what it would have looked like this year:
- #1 Georgia - bye
- #2 Michigan - bye
- #7 Clemson - bye
- #8 Utah - bye
- #16 Tulane @ #3 TCU - winner plays Utah
- #11 Penn State @ #4 Ohio State - winner plays Clemson
- #10 USC @ #5 Alabama - winner plays Michigan
- #9 Kansas State @ #6 Tennessee - winner plays Georgia
The reason for the byes is they go to the 4 highest conference champions. Because of this, Notre Dame will never get a bye, even if undefeated and #1. Have to win a conference to get it. Interesting to see what ND does now that they arent getting special rules in their favor.
Also, The 6 highest conference champions get in automatically, regardless of ranking. So this year Tulane would be in as the 6th, and Washington out as #12.
Can't wait for this to kick in!
Imo just get back to the AP poll take the top 16 and end the season for all other teams. No conference championship games and no bowl games. Slick Nick said last night nobody cares about the bowl games so why play ‘em
I don't agree that the bowl games mean nothing anymore. They mean a lot to the teams that get to play in them, including 3 more weeks of practice time. They also mean a lot to the fans that get to go to them. I have gone to 5 or 6 PSU bowl games and thoroughly enjoyed every one of them. Even the losses. Now if your team is in the playoff, do you spend your hard earned bucks to go to the first round? Hold out for the second round? Or place all your eggs in one basket and hold out for the championship. The championship game's "fans" will end up being a bunch of rich a$$holes with few actual fans there. But what am I talking about, college football has nothing to do with colleges or faithful fans.
@southern-psu-fan The same AP system that screwed Penn State in 1994? No thanks. That was as corrupt as it gets. Even Big Ten writers voted against PSU out of jealousy.
Nick’s comments were selfish and short sighted. Ask the 5th year seniors who will play their last football game of their lives if bowl games mean something to them. The same kids who poured their blood, sweat, and tears into their programs and won’t be privileged enough to make it their career after the bowl game. Nick is normally more calculated in his comments. This one doesn’t sit well with me. It’s makes him sound spoiled and unappreciative of the kids that unselfishly are the back bones of all programs. The kids that kill themselves in practice to see little to no playing time, but would give anything for one more game. I think the comment was made in poor taste and I’m normally a fan of Nick.
When you're sitting at the table the food taste a lot better than having to look in from the porch.@southern-psu-fan The same AP system that screwed Penn State in 1994? No thanks. That was as corrupt as it gets. Even Big Ten writers voted against PSU out of jealousy.

@psu61Maybe, but he comes off as a silver spooned rich kid out of touch with reality with a comment like that.
Funny thing is I saw him totday talking about how he was happy for the kids to get a chance to prove something in the Sugar Bowl game. So, not sure what he thinks?
Guys I love the bowl games but I believe even a lot of fans don’t want so many bowl games. Personally regardless if it’s a sellout or not I love watching the bowls but just listening around it sounds like fans and some of the players don’t want the Belk bowl and I love that bowl. It’s getting where it’s like if we aren’t in the playoffs people don’t care about the season anymore but I hate to tell you only 4 teams make the playoffs so odds of make the playoffs are slim and I mean very slim bu that’ll change in a 2024 and I believe it’ll get better. We’ve had a dang good year baby and even some of us wanted James Franklin to give up on the season and start working on next year. I’m with ya 99 it’s hard as hell to win 11 games playing Michigan and Ohio St every year so we better enjoying it when we get it done. I am tired of the garbage with this CFP crap but it’s just one more year.
@southern-psu-fan Yep, love bowl season & yep, too freakin' many of them! If they have to invite teams with a losing record to fill open slots, there are too many and makes for a few "I Don't Care Who's In 'em" Bowls.
@been-there-ii I agree but at the same time if Penn St had a losing record and they was in a bowl I’d watch and pull for ‘em to win just like ANY other games. The goal is always to win as many games possible with absolutely no exceptions. Just win baby win!
99, with 12 teams it will be much harder to keep Penn St out. Y’all don’t think it’s a coincidence that Penn St was basically the only team that dropped 3 spots do you? Give me a freaking break. Just another time I’m pointing this shit out!
Not that much harder Southern. Look, they dropped us down to #11. That's pretty close to being out of the magical 12! Maybe they're practicing for 2024, lol.

In some years, #11 would be out of the playoffs too. If two of the 6 highest conference champions were outside of the top 12, then #11 and #12 are out. Meaning if Purdue had beaten Michigan, we'd have missed an expanded playoff this year.
@southern-psu-fan lol Bowl game or not, I'd watch a PSU team w/ a losing record. I watch them any time I can, good or bad. & we have been bad at times.
I'm with you two guys. I'd watch them no matter what. Before I gave up my season tickets (in protest for what they did to JoePa) I never missed a home game in 44 years as well as many, many away games and bowl games. And your right BT, there were some bad times, but I kept the faith, lol.
@rip I believe it was around year 2000 and we weren’t having a great year and we were playing Indiana in Indianapolis and man I was all over the living room because it was such a good and close game and every win meant something because the goat Joe Paterno was either trying to get the record or he was padding his lead over the great Bobby Bowden and man I was nervous and anxious wanting to get that win baby because Bobby was right on his butt with wins lol. It’s not like it was a NC game but man I was nervous 😂
How does the division 2 do the playoffs? I was really just for taking the top 12 regardless if you won the conference? Odds are if you win a power 5 conference you’ll be in the top 12but if you’re not you probably don’t need to be in the playoffs. If it’s just 8 I’d rather take conference champs
Go down to Steven A talking alabama with Paul Finebaum. He’s 100% correct ole southern couldn’t have said it any better.
That's a really good point that most would not realize until the beer and celebration wore off.Not that much harder Southern. Look, they dropped us down to #11. That's pretty close to being out of the magical 12! Maybe they're practicing for 2024, lol.

Who cares about what that big blowhard Stephen A has to say. Just cause he feels the need to yell everything to make a point doesn’t mean he’s right.

The FCS has a 24 team playoff, and certain cinferences receive auto bids. Top seeds gets byes
@roaminglion I’d rather have a system where nobody gets a bye and hopefully the 12 team gives us that.
@psuinhawaii understood buddy. I just listened to the dude from the CFP and he said it wasn’t discussed about having a rematch between Ohio St and Michigan. This dude is talking to us like we’re stupid like listening to a politician telling you something when you know he’s lying 😂. On my defense, I really thought this CFP was about getting the 4 best teams on the field and I guess I was hearing things when they put this thing together but apparently it’s about who deserves it. I thought the 4 best teams is who deserves it but I’m dead wrong I guess and I guess the reason Steven A was so upset is because he’s thinks the same thing I did and I guess he’s wrong too. Steve A and myself are taking it like we the CFP are telling y’all that TCU is better than Alabama and Ohio St and that’s why we have TCU third and that imo is you’re talking to me like I’m stupid because I’ve been watching football long enough to know better. So it’s not that Alabama ain’t better than TCU it’s because Alabama doesn’t deserve being in the playoffs and TCU does. I don’t understand it but I may as well except it. Most people don’t like the eye test but Hawaii I swear before the Lord Jesus right now I can see the difference in the talent level between Alabama/Ohio St and TCU and it ain’t even close my brother. Put TCU against alabama or Ohio St in a playoff and TCU loses 10 out f 10 games. Steven A and ole southern just needs to except alabama doesn’t deserve it. That’s I guess what makes this fun lol
@southern-psu-fan Yo Bro! Reality is, the CFP selection reasoning should start out, "Once upon a time" or as the Navy folks, used to say before launching into a reasonably embellished sea story. "I shit you not".
Either way, as far as I can tell, selection has as much cred as a fairy tale. Possibly a little less cred than the "Fractured Fairy Tales" we old guys used to watch on Captain Kangaroo.
