Joe…. Please stop. You have no idea who he is and his question is legitimate. Please respond respectfully and use your football knowledge.

I'm not certain of the numbers, but there is a limit as to how many kids you can have on a roster during the off-season. I think it's something like 105, which means if you have 85 scholarship players, you can only have 20 walk-ons at that moment. If you have 75 scholarship players, you can have 30 walk-ons.
During the season, I don't think there's a limit to the roster number... but from what I hear usually teams have somewhere around 120 players... and only 85 can be scholarship athletes.
@roaminglion That's kind of what I was finding, but there were sites talking 125 players, some talking 120 players and the 105 off season limit. Add to that the whole Covid + year.... lol I'm easily confused, so I just gave shrug and decided not to post.
If a kid enters the transfer portal, but hasn't got any takers yet, can we assume he counts against roster limits?
I would rather send GT players not get what few they have😡
@rip Not sounding that way Bob.
"....Student-athletes have several options upon entering the portal. They can transfer elsewhere as a scholarship player or as a walk-on. Although they can withdraw from the portal at any time, the team they intended to leave is not required to take them back or keep them on scholarship....."

@southern-psu-fan Well, hell, if he wants to leave, may as well come to PSU and you can still root for him!
Thanks, BT. Just thinkin', if the kid doesn't count against roster limits, could a devious coach manipulate the system by having players enter the portal, with no intention on leaving, so as to circumvent roster limits?? I know I have a sick mind, but just thinkin'.
@rip lol I'm sure some coaches will take a long hard look at trying to run an end around. You would think, if a player goes portal and comes back, he's still got to be accounted for, in the roster total(be it 125, 120 or 105) and/or 85 on scholie limit.
I agree with you're reasoning, BT, but what about when he's in the portal?? He hasn't left, but he hasn't come back. Does he count against the roster limit??
@rip I don't think they stay on scholarship or at least not what I can fathom.
Per SYR.com
4) Athletes can withdraw from the portal; it’s then up to the school to decide whether to take that athlete back and restore his/her scholarship.
I believe they remain on scholarship for that semester, but the school has the right to end their scholarship at the end of the semester. They can also be removed from the team immediately.
If they wait to enter the portal until after the spring semester starts, they remain on scholarship for the semester. However if they leave before the spring semester starts, their scholarship can be removed and they are out of luck if they can't find another school in time.
Thanks for putting up with my random thoughts, BT. I think I've hurt my head enough this morning, LOL. As everybody knows, I don't like the transfer portal concept or the NIL either. I just believe both are ripe for abuse and not at all good for college football. Just my opinion and thanks again for listening to me vent.
Speaking on NIL, I believe it's the NCAA's bad leadership over the past 15 years that lead to this. Their messaging has been terrible, and it had people believing they were the reason kids couldn't go pro. Every time something about the NBA or the NFL came up, the NCAA should have ADAMENTLY stated that those leagues were responsible. The NCAA is not keeping you from the NBA. The NCAA is not keeping you from the NFL. Those two leagues are. Want to go pro in tennis? Good for you! Want to go pro in soccer? Have at it! Want to go pro in swimming... track... etc. etc. etc??? GO RIGHT AHEAD!
The statement should have read like this: "The NCAA has stated rules to compete in AMATUER ATHLETIC COMPETITION. These rules are in place to allow fair and balanced competition across all of our member institutions. If you can not, or do not want to adhere to these rules you do not have to, but you can not play here. We will not change the rules because other leagues are not allowing you to participate, you need to go to those leagues and talk to them. They are the ones who are denying you membership, not us. We will not turn NCAA sports into a professional league just because other leagues won't allow you to play in them."
Unfortunately, they never did. They kept apologizing or getting defensive... If they placed the blame where it SHOULD HAVE BEEN, with the actual leagues not allowing players to get drafted... I don't think this would have happened. IMO the one and done rule in basketball really started the movement to this. If the NCAA just kept telling people the NBA is at fault, and kept pumping that message out, I think the NBA would have rescinded the rule a long time ago and the NIL thing would have, at least, had a lot more people against it.
@been-there-ii oh yeah I’ll be his biggest cheerleader brother but I’m assuming gettin backup players from Alabama, Clemson and LSU would be better but as long as we win, I’m good with anything.

Little Joe, You think I'm Blushoes and Forum titan?? Do you ever grow weary of being wrong??
Just curious T...How do you know "Joe" is little?
@the-funeral-director : I know a lot of stuff. Take your own advice and mind your own business.
LOL...So I take it you have met Homer? Trust me I don't need to come to Homer's defense as I am sure he can handle himself...I am just curious if you know for sure that Homer is a small man? I have no idea as I have never had the privilege of meeting Homer...As far as knowing a lot of stuff that leaves a lot open for interpretation...
Little may not be referring to stature, it could be a reference to the mind.

Here's an idea. Next time you're "in the area" why not hook up with little Joe and find out for yourself??
Perhaps he'll have a sausage for you to try and when you're done with that and adult drinks, he can smoke your white owl.
