Constant 4th quarter collapses, not beating top ranked teams, questionable play-calling in key situations, etc. etc. etc.

It doesn't matter who is the OC or DC, it's always the same result. How many coordinators do we need to see??? The schemes change, the players change, but the same exact issues persist... Crap the bed in big games and blow leads in the 4th. Let big, physical offensive/defensive lines push us around. Etc. etc. etc.

At what point do you say the reason our defense plays wierd prevent, let them score in 35 seconds when in the 4th quarter, defense ISNT THE COORDINATOR. No matter who the coordinator is... it happens. THAT IS THE COACH.

Same goes for the offense... no matter who the coordinator is, it's always the same. Don't talk about Moorhead either, because we didn't beat Ohio State because of offense in 2016... and we lost to USC... you guessed it... LEADING in the 4th and did what is so predictable now. Got tight, turtled, went into stupid defense, and lost the lead. As we do under Franklin. 2017. 2018. 2019. And now 2022... Always the same thing, no matter who the OC & DC are. THAT IS 100% THE HEAD COACH.

And yeah, we should roll the dice. I don't care if Nebraska got rid of some guy and hasn't done well since. Guess what? Georgia rolled the dice and replaced Richt with Kirby Smart... sometimes you have to take that risk.

I 100 percent agree again ! I believe that Franklin blew his chance at becoming elite in 2017 and 2018 and it’s become more and more obvious that he’ll never get us there. I listened to parts of the post game show and it sounded like the fanbase as a whole is starting to get tired of the guy and a couple more losses like this and JF’s seat may get a little warm.

History tells us we most likely won’t win the rest of our games this year and if we lose once like we did last year to Illinois things might get interesting.

But can they afford to make a change after the new contract that just started? Just like the president of the United States, I’ll always pull for Penn St football to win and I’ll never pull for us to lose to get a coach fired I just don’t have it in me so winning 10 or 11 games every year is probably what we’re looking at. Look at the teams 7th through 15th we’re better that all of ‘em I mean Oklahoma St, Oregon, Wake Forrest , TCU and UCLA..we’ll kick their ass and make ‘em like it but where we stand today we can’t beat the top 6 teams except maybe Clemson I’m still not sold on Clemson I know they’re undefeated I still don’t like ‘em. Do you make a change because you can’t beat Ohio St and Michigan and pay out all that money because you can’t beat 2 top 5 teams? I don’t think they will but I’ll still be pulling for us to win regardless of what decision they make. This is just where we are because of the stupid contract they signed last year. The thing is we do have the players to beat anybody in the top 5 and that’s because of James Franklin so let that set in 😂

Southern, you're saying this after 2 terrible seasons... not just "can't beat 2 teams"

@roaminglion  I’m just looking at where we are today. RB’s are much better and the OL looks a lot better and Diaz does look like the real deal we just can’t beat top 5 teams. Do you fire a coach that goes 10-3 or 11-2 and pay him 50 million dollars to get rid of him because he can’t beat top 5 teams? If it wasn’t for paying him 50 million dollars I say yes but I don’t see them firing him. I’m just looking at the big picture.

You're probably right, Southern.  Give this one a little thought:  If we lose to Indiana, Maryland, Rutgers, or Mich St, can we afford to pay the bucks and fire him then?

Would Meatchicken make a change if they couldn’t beat OSU and PSU? Would OSU make a change if they couldn’t beat Meatchicken and PSU? I don’t agree that we have the players to beat anyone, we’re not recruiting on the elite level yet and we never will until the perception of the program changes.

Doing it once doesn’t make you elite nor does one class make a team great. To be elite you have to do it consistently. Where’s the momentum from last years recruiting success? They have spots open in this years class that they’re having a hard time filling and we can’t even get the 2 and 3 star scrubs to commit to us right now.

@southern-psu-fan

I am going to go out on a limb here to say that MOST OF US HERE LOVED JOE! Reasonable Statement?

JVP won a National Championship in 1986 and then went 25 years w/o winning another one.  Under todays CFP, he probably would have won another one in 1994....which would have meant he went 17 years w/o winning another one.

Franklin is filling the stadium, selling tickets, going to bowl games and the football program continues to be the "cash cow".  If anyone thinks JF is on the hot seat, you are dead wrong. Between 2000 and 2004 JVP ONLY had one winning season and he was not fired for that.  JF has only had one losing season and THAT season was a mess from the get go with the Covid outbreak....or whatever you want to call it today.

JVP - The WINNINGEST ALLTIME COACH - had a losing record against top 10 teams!

Not counting this year:

Brain Kelly.....3-11 vs top 10 teams

Jimbo Fisher.....11-17 vs top 10 teams

Kirk Ferentz.....12-22 vs top 10 teams

Ryan Day....5-2 vs top 10 teams.......I think Ohio State was already a powerhouse when he stepped in???

Lincoln Riley....6-3 vs top 10 teams....Bob Stoops had that program cranking for 15 years before Riley came in.  And just how well are the sooners doing this year?

Kirby Smart....11-6 vs top 10 teams....he is not an Elite coach yet.  He can thank Richt for what he has and most Dawg fans will tell you that!!

Jim Harbaugh.....4-5 vs top 10 teams. Michigan wanted to throw him to the wolves.....not hearing that so much this year!

ELITE COACHES

Dabo Sweeny....17-10....he has done a great job at Clemson!!

Saban....34-11 vs top 10 teams and 0-1 this year....only one loss less than Franklin this year.LOL......  Saban comes from the same mold as Joe!

Joe Paterno....35-47 vs top 10 teams......STILL HAS THE MOST WINS VS TOP 10 TEAMS!!!!!

We are ALL tired of losing against top 10 teams, me included!! But JF has done a great job keeping Penn State relevant and we need to shake off the pain for another season.  Penn State is going return a lot of good players next year and hopefully Allar is as good as advertised! I know we keep saying next year and it sounds like a broken record.  But, take a hard look at what is coming back and then you add in a potential pro QB, maybe this will be the last time we say next year!!! I will be the first to admit that I am ready for somebody new, but when you look at the program he {JF} took over - and you MUST consider this like it or not - somebody new may not be the answer.

Win out, go out to a NY6 bowl game and the 2023 season may be the start of what we have been waiting for.  Penn State is going to be a loaded team next season, so the excuses will come to an end!!!!

GO STATE!!!!!

These two are where you went off the rails IMO:

Lincoln Riley....6-3 vs top 10 teams....Bob Stoops had that program cranking for 15 years before Riley came in.  And just how well are the sooners doing this year?

Kirby Smart....11-6 vs top 10 teams....he is not an Elite coach yet.  He can thank Richt for what he has and most Dawg fans will tell you that!!

1. Lincoln Riley isn't at Oklahoma, he left and went to USC. So it kinda shows he knew what he was doing there, and to add to it USC is a top 10 team this year when he stepped in as coach.

2. Georgia fans would absolutly not tell you that. Yeah, they liked Richt but Kirby Smart took this team to an entirely different level. Plus, Smart is a Georgia graduate, former player, and started as a grad assistant at Georgia... he's 100% their guy, and no way are they takiung away any credit for what he's accomplished. This one is way off.

@roaminglion  Roam, I rewatch the game and I believe we got a dam good football team we just ain’t a top 5 team. On James Franklin defense does he have the recruiting grounds Kirby has? I say no and I believe James Franklin has us going in the right direction after watching the game again. We just ain’t good enough at QB to be top 5 but I’m telling ya we can beat the rest. It’s easy to get frustrated when you lose but I don’t believe anybody else would be any better than Franklin after I’ve sit and thought about a few things. If anybody can pull off gettin us in the top 5 it’s James Franklin. I got a whole different perspective today baby after watching that Ohio St game again. We got a good very young team that will keep gettin better just wait and see. It’s my mind and I’ve always told y’all I’ll change it in a minute lol

I'd say the best thing that could happen to Franklin was the playoff expanding to 12. I wish it was this year, because we'd have a great chance of getting in. However, it's so frustrating to constantly lose to Ohio State after leading in the 4th. Just every damn time it feels like. I HATE IT.

@roaminglion

What I was trying to get across is how some of the better known coaches are doing against top 10 teams and compare them to JF. Now, this is just my opinion, but had Joe just simply retired and JF taken over I think JF's top 10 performance would be much better.  Or least in line with the mentioned coaches. Kirby is doing a great job and he can recruit 5 stars like the best of them. Add that to the foundation Richt established and you can see why his success accelerated at GA.  Lincoln Riley had similar success ( vs top 10) at Oklahoma resulting from the work Stoops did.

I know it has been 10 years, but Penn State was a mess and I can't speak for you, but I am seeing more and more talent finally coming our way. I am not going to go back and analyze the scholarship sanctions, who fled and who didn't, but that ALL impacted JF's situation and he has done pretty good job with this program. So when people bust on his top 10 performance, I think they need to look at his entire time at Penn State and NOT just 10 or so games.  The overall talent level at Penn State (today) is by far the best it has been in a long time.

Allar, Allen, Singleton, Smith, Washington, Johnson, Warren, Evans and Wallace.......that's quite a group of Fr/So returning next season.  Outside of Allar, all of these cats have improved and keep improving week after week.  Allar will have his turn and I am sure he will be a monster of QB for Penn State once he gets his feet wet.  That Top 10 issue JF is having will self correct over the next two years.  If not, then he is the issue.  But right now, I can't jump on that band wagon.  He finally got the talent he needs, they are getting great experience this year and this is the most talent ALL AT ONCE we have ever had at Penn State under JF.

Thanks for listening!! LOL

@mtnittanylion One recruiting class is not going to make a team great and let’s not pretend that JF hasn’t had the talent to compete in the past. It was just a few short years ago that all the experts were claiming that the way we were recruiting made us the #1 threat to overtake OSU as the kings of the B1G. And then we went 11-11 over 2 seasons.

@psujoe since 2019 we’ve recruited 62 4* and 3  5* recruits. This includes this years class. IMO james Franklin is killing it in recruiting we just gotta do better at QB and DE. I don’t believe there’s a whole lot wrong we just need to get better at these 2 positions as of today. Maybe around 15 3*. Recruiting grounds ain’t quite what they use to be in Pa and Ohio and Georgia are loaded especially Georgia. James Franklin has to work harder at it.

@southern-psu-fan as I’ve stated in my previous post let’s not pretend that JF hasn’t had the players or good recruiting classes in the past. From 2017 to 2019 he had similar recruiting success as 2020 to 2022 so what is different now that makes us so much better?

@psujoe  we had a better QB and Better DE’s the 2 positions I believe we need to be better plus having 2 of the best RB’s to ever play at Penn St also helped. This years team is very young. The problem I have with James Franklin ain’t this year even though Ive been frustrated it’s 11-11 the previous 2 years. But having that many more 5* recruits does make Ohio St have a leg up just like Alabama and Georgia has a leg up on the SEC. Let’s see how we finish out the season. Trust me I feel your frustration but sometimes we’re not as good as Michigan and Ohio St.

@been-there-ii  exactly right BT and the problem Harbaugh was having was going to the transfer portal and getting QB’s and I was saying why is he doing this crap he’s a QB guru and he needs to groom his own QB and that’s what he’s done and it’s paying off for Michigan. We’re as good as Michigan except at QB and DE. Our LB’s are young they will be studs in the next few years. We sent 9 to the NFL last year this is imo a rebuilding year.

When you don’t have 15 5* players on the team odds are you’ll have to rebuild every few years you won’t just plug in players like Alabama and Georgia do. Bob didn’t recruit that good and if he would’ve stayed on at Penn St we all would be crying the blues right now instead of crying about losing to 2 teams that’s just better this year. Alabama has five 5* recruits just in the 2023 class

Georgia and Alabama are the rich, rich and richer in football recruiting today 😂 it ain’t even fair and Ohio St ain’t far behind ‘em. This is just the truth. The great Steve Spurrier said ain’t no team in the history of sports wasted more talent than UGA
