Listening to sports radio over the past few days, it's obvious that immediate transfer rules will happen soon. Maybe even for next year (2021 season). After thinking about it for a bit, I've actually become comfortable with it because:
1. It's in most other NCAA sports already, so it's not like this is a new thing. Wrestlers have been able to do it forever and it doesn't hurt the sport IMO.
2. I think the portal has shown that their are quite a few players sitting on the bench that could be playing at a high level somewhere else. I'm all for a player getting a second chance at picking the right school if he made the wrong decision as a 17 year old.
3. If it's a one time thing. I believe in the other sports it's one transfer without sitting, but if you want to transfer again then you have to sit.
4. This would level the playing field for all colleges, no BS "waivers" for kids that don't deserve them just because they are high profile.
5. I actually think this may make college football MORE COMPETITIVE. If kids can transfer out without penalty, I think you'll see a lot of the bigger programs affected by it. 4 & 5 star players leaving to go to other schools, rather than sitting behind another 4 or 5 star player on the depth chart. Gone would be the days of stockpiling tremendous talent that may never even see the field, those kids would most likely leave for a chance to play somewhere else.

Sounds good...
I would add that the portal shuts down after spring ball and does not open back until the season ends.
i agree nitnation about cutting off the transfer portal day after your teams spring game and if they let these guys transfer out without sitting they have to transfer to another conference. I don’t like the move because I don’t believe in trying to fix something that ain’t broke because college football is and has been great for a 150 years but as long as all teams are playing by the same rules I’ll just have to learn to like it. Hey roam it’s hard to compare other sports to football because you have a lot more players and football takes care of all the other sports with money.

Yeah... The points that roam make are fine if they go that route. Would much rather see it as everyone sits a year no waiver. This would not include the grad transfer.
Time frame still needs to be put on portal open and close.
I have zero issue if a player wants to transfer but it can't be a free for all.

Same rules for basketball, hockey, and baseball. Why would those have a 1 year sit but not others?
And because Football has 85 scholarship players, it actually makes less sense to have a 1 year wait. You have over 3 strings of depth on the roster, while many other sports don't have nearly that much. A soccer team, for instance, would be more affected by a transfer because there's only 18 kids on the team... not even a full roster of backups, let alone third-stringers.
Wrestling has to field 10 and has 9.5 scholarships. Who has the 1/2 scholarship. Imagine how much more dominant Cael would be with 15?
I know what you’re saying roam but from what I hear wrestling and most other sports can’t find enough money to pay for itself and football pretty much pays for most of all the other sports so why mess with something that’s been working? IMO just give more money with stipends for the football players.
How it used to work a long time ago. Football and Basketball gave full scholarships. The other non revenue sports could give partial scholarships or full. In wrestling almost every guy came in on a half or third. You could bump percentages up to full if you went to nationals or became an all Amercian. Also, some guys are real smart with 4.0's could get academic scholarships. Also, I believe walk ons who didn't really have much chance of making the team could get books paid for and maybe meals. That was in the past, but I don't think much has changed.

What exactly does money have to do with kids being able to transfer? Your argument boils down to "we've been taking advantage of the kids for this long, so why fix it now?"
@roaminglio
all this crap has started up because of money and to keep from paying the players they’re throwing this crap up. Change some of the rules and they can put off paying the players for a little while longer. Did you forget I’m the one that’s been saying get the football players more money or more perks whatever you want to call it.

Players do not need paid, they are not employees of the university.
This is older but still stands IMO... Players are not oppressed and are not slaves to the system.
The only part I disagree with is the part about the Universities paying players for likeness and jersey sales. If a player wants to strike a deal to sell his likeness in a dealership ad for example good for them but that money should not come from the University.
@nitnation2016i agree nitnation I’m for just giving more perks for the football players since they bring in the most money. I have said pay but I meant more money with stipends. Sorry I need to watch how I say things lol. IMO letting players jump ship hurts stability and that could hurt college football if guys are jumping ship all the time.

I agree stipends should get looked at so it keeps up with cost somewhat...
My son has taken visits to many schools and the amount of perks for Dii schools is ridiculous. He has friends that are taking visits to Di power 5 and non-power and it's even more crazy with what they get.
The ability to have what these athletes get over the average student that is paying tuition is big...

No it didn't. All this crap started because football, basketball, and baseball player started to ask why everyone else is allowed to transfer but they're not. It's stupid, there is no reason to treat baseball, basketball, etc. differently in respect to transfers.
Regarding payments, no school should pay anyone beyond the stipend. I actually am not a big fan of the stipend to begin with, with everything they get from the University they don't need "extra" money. Unlimited food, all books and materials, tutors, preferential treatment, etc. should be enough. One thing I would do was to make that year round. Even during summer or vacation, athletes on scholarship should have the meals and dorm access still. IMO... but no stipend. The University has everything they need.
As for selling their own likeness, why not... I have no issue with it but wouldn't mind the NCAA at least setting some common sense guidelines about it

Once the door is open for college athletes to profit in that way, the door is open wide for boosters to pay players under a guise. Instead of hundred-dollar handshakes, it can be $10,000 billboards. At that point, common sense guidelines wouldn't be much more than guidelines, because the NCAA would be virtually incapable of policing at that level.

One easy guideline is no booster or anyone associated with the school can pay them. If found out, the school gets punished.
So kids can make money all they want, no need to police them. Just focus on policing the schools and their boosters.
Sad to say, but that might be the most realistic alternative. I'm not saying that what you suggested in your previous post wouldn't work in a perfect world, but given the NCAA's record of selective enforcement, college football is far from a perfect world, lol.
