I seem to remember reading that any player that enters the portal risks the chance of the school automatically cancelling their scholarships whether they are picked up by another team or not. As a way to prevent this from getting out of control, do you foresee a team ... aka Penn State, automatically pulling schollies from the Portal Entrants as a way to curb this behavior. I understand those that have graduated are completely different. Speaking of those that graduated, isn't it stated somewhere that they can transfer to another school as long as your current school does not offer that major. A school as big as PSU, I find it hard to believe that these athletic scholars are finding majors that PSU doesn't offer.
I think they will evaluate it this year. The “can of worms” of basically free agency is starting to lose its lid. I will still say most of those entering are basically depth guys. However, when players start seeing the grass really isn’t geeener on another field things will slow down. It’s something new, and nobody really knows the overall affect it will have. Also remember we are only really paying attention to the big timers and psu players. The list is huge and still growing.

The players no longer need to find a school with a different major. Browne transferred from USC's MBA program directly to Pitt's MBA program. I believe they got rid of that for the 2016 or 2017 year.
I believe they are throwing around a provision for allowing kids to transfer without penalty if they meet a certain GPA level as well, though I don't know if that would pass or not.
I think they should have to sit a year regardless unless they have graduated then they shouldn’t have to sit a year. The NFL needs to change the age to enter draft to 22 unless the kid has graduated then it’s 21. People love college football and it’s going to be destroyed if something isn’t done. We have to pretty much force these kids to get an education but it’s for their own good IMO
another major situation in all this to keep an eye on is Tate Martell hiring a lawyer to show hardship because of the sudden change of coach. If they win it will set a much needed precedent that would allow player movement if the school changes coaches. Yes, it does cause initial instability for a team but when a pro style QB is recruited and 2 years later a school brings in a coach who likes to run it changes the need for said QB. could be interesting

IMO that's not a hardship, you commit to a school not a coach. Goes both ways, if a coach leaving is a hardship then why is a player leaving not a hardship to the school?
Gotta agree with you Bill. Question is whether the coaching change is likely to affect the player. Yes, a QB is affected by the offensive philosophy, but would you allow a LB or DB to transfer if a coaching change? Is it a subjective standard or an across the board decision?

It would be a terrible decisions IMO, because where would it end? If the LB coach leaves does that mean any LB can transfer out? What about the Defensive Coordinator? If the new guy runs a 3-4 and a DT recruit doesn't want to play nose tackle is that fair game?

I’m of the opinion that you should have option to leave within first 2 years at the school IF the coach leaves and IF they haven’t used up more than one year of eligibility. The coach is as important a decision as the school for many players.
Like you said Roam kids committ to the school not the coaches. My way nips everything in the bud and it’s simple to understand and there’s no wiggle room. You know the rules going in.
You hit the nail on the head Southern. All this transfer crapola is going to kill college football. As it is right now, the power 5 conferences constitute a AAA minor league system for the NFL. The NCAA is more than willing to give the players what amounts to free agency as opposed to dealing with the issue of openly paying them.

The one thing I'm totally against is paying the players. It's ridiculous on so many levels.
I totally agree. I'm 100% against paying the kids. My point is, I think the NCAA is hoping that by throwing them a bone (transfer portal, i.e. free agency) the pay issue will be forgotten in all the excitement and hoopla.
The player still has to sit out a year if an undergrad e.g. Player A transfers and maybe starts in two years, however by then the next fresh phenom will be signed and Player A will never see the field and will be a could have been. On the other hand, if the player is immediately eligible that then changes the game.
