Hey Roam, if you only had time to see one thing in the Portland area, what would it be?
Well there's a lot of under the radar stuff, but I'd have to say the one thing that anyone coming to Portland should see is Washington Park... more specifically the International Rose Test Garden. It's a cliche choice, but it is pretty amazing. The town isn't called "Rose City" for nothing, LMAO. The one thing is its fairly seasonal, you need to come in the summer to fully appreciate it. I also like the history of the Rose Garden: Oldest in the USA, it was started over 100 years ago as a precaution to preserve cultivars from England during WWI.
Also in Washington Park is a very nice authentic Japanese Garden, a nice Zoo, the World Forestry Center, and an Arboretum. It's a very nice way to spend a day.
Now... all that said... If you are wondering about the other sport called football in the USA, I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND attending a Portland Timbers game. They are the MLS team here in Portland, and let me tell you... the atmosphere is AMAZING. Fans are crazy, the Timbers Army arrives 1 hour before the game, takes up 1/4 of the stadium, never sits down, and basically cheers and drums the entire game. It's a really, really great way to be introduced to the sport of soccer. Full disclosure: I'm a season ticket holder (after being on the waiting list for 5 years / the list is longer than that now)
The bar and food scene in Portland is pretty awesome, and we have more strip clubs per capita than anywhere else in the country. LMAO. Last think would be beer and wine tours. Though wine country is outside the city, it's close and is one of the best areas in the country for wine... especially Pinot Noir. Go to a place called Mineral Springs Ranch (Soter Wine, they also own North Valley Wine), it's AWESOME.
Thanks Roam!
