My wife is currently taking a Master's course in education/leadership. It's online through a very high profile college... the reason I say that is because in one of her courses the Jerry Sandusky scandal is being used to describe failure of leadership.

You all are probably rolling your eyes thinking "here we go"....... but Paterno is actually used as a tragic figure in the course. The course teaches how the authorities tasked to investigate the crimes failed, as did the designated institutional officer (Shultz). It goes into how the media and public had godlike expectations for Paterno, and what everything "thought" he should have done after he appropriately told the authorities what he had heard. That anyone who would expect a private citizen to go on a personal quest for justice is completely unreasonable and unrealistic. My wife said the professor stopped short of saying he was a scapegoat... but the implication was there.

Leadership failed, but Paterno wasn't the "leadership" in this case. The professor described the authorities and investigators were the leadership, not a football coach. Never, ever, should a football coach (teacher, doctor, etc.. /// all mandated reporters) be tasked with anything other than reporting. However, the focus was upon Paterno and it was unfair. He reputation was ruined by a mob/media frenzy like in the 80's when those stories of demonic daycare workers spread like wildfire and ruined people's lives

The institution is Johns Hopkins... so no jok e a very respected school. I was pleasantly surprised when my wife told me about this.
