Taking a look at the top 100 HS O'line recruits, the following is a short break down of the top 50 commits:

Bama 5:

Clemson 4

WI 4

OSU 3

PSU 1

What's interesting is that the top recruits don't necessarily go to their in state school.

PSU flat out gets out recruited on the O'line. If a team can recruit 3-5 guys a year, that does give the ability to develop and reload on a yearly basis, can't do it with one; stars matter.

On another note, JF does a great job recruiting skill players/athletes unfortunately that isn't how you build a solid house; gotta have the foundation first.

And honestly, in terms of location/amenities; what does Madison WI, Tuscaloosa AL, Clemson SC, and Columbus OH, offer that is not available in State College? Seriously, I'd like to know.

Sorry, I disagree with you on this. Penn State did not lose 4 games this year because of the Oline!

Cincy beat ND with ZERO 4 or 5 star starters....ZERO! But two of their 3 star recruits this year are pegged as 1st round draft picks. Cincy's best recruiting class in the past 5 years was ranked at #41 and ND's WORSE class was ranked #18. Fickell can and has shown that he is able to develop players and this is why Cincy is in the CFP conversion with ZERO 4 or 5 Star players!

If I am going to build a strong foundation for my home?  I am going to start by HIRING contractors with that KNOW how to use the tools they have to work with!

Wait a minute, this board has repeatedly pointed out how stars matter! I didn't say every single poster etc....Okay so my post was meant to be somewhat provocative but there is some conceptual foundation to the content that is relevant. We've all said at some point that JF doesn't develop players, so, okay, whether you are a 5* or 3*, it doesn't matter in some cases but it sure helps to have a good starting point. Also I believe in some cases stars are inflated and that is all that some see vs how the star was qualified. And you can know how to use the tools you have but in some cases the tools you have and knowing how to use them does not necessarily build what you need for job/structure at hand; it may get you buy for a while, but at some point without a solid foundation, the structure is gonna crumble to a superior force. I honestly think this team is a good example, during the first 5 games this year, it was about maybe losing to OSU but looking through the sharp lens, you could see a downfall down the road and that unless the stars aligned and a lot help otherwise, the freaking O'line was gonna be and is a HUGE problem!

Coaching matters! Some do more with less like Fickell and others do less with more like Franklin. Stars are secondary to coaching.

Out of curiosity, I did some research.  Our roster lists a total of 19 OLMen.  There are 9 -4*s, 6 -3*s & 4 walk-ons.  Out of this pool, we can't get 5 guys that can block?  I'm thinking, either *s don't mean sheet or our coaching don't mean sheet.  It's gotta be one or the other, or maybe it's both!

@psujoe  Fickell did less with more at Ohio St he went 6-7 a team loaded with NFL talent. Coaching teams like Cincinnati and UCF ain’t the same when you’re coaching the big dawgs when you face competition every week. I know Ohio St got drug through a little mud nothing like Penn St where BOB still won 8 games probably could’ve won 9 if we could’ve went to a bowl.

@rip  Limegrover had this thing going in the right direction and James Franklin fired him and I told roam then, when you fire somebody doing a good job it might come back to bite you in the ass and that’s exactly what has happened. I’m pretty sure that Rocco OC that was here one year wanted him gone and it was probably his decision but James Franklin should’ve overrode him on that because even if the OL wasn’t  great it was so much better than when he got to Penn St and look at it now talk about smh. RB’s and O-line going to the NFL and we fire the OL coach WTH! Lol

You just said a QB situation can mess everything up, then say Fickell is bad because he went 6-7 without mentioning that team had the coach they loved fired and the starting QB left because he was in trouble along with many other starters being suspended. Oh yeah, also they were banned from playing in the BTC...

But sure yeah, it was business as usual that year at Ohio State LOL

@roaminglion   He had a 5* QB Braxton Miller that went undefeated the first year Meyer was there roam give me a break. It was a bad situation but 6-7 ain’t going to cut it at Ohio st and that’s why he was shown the door.

@southern-psu-fan Are you effing kidding me? Yeah he had a true freshman QB who was thrown into a situation with multiple suspensions and the coach he signed with gone.

My lord. You do get that true freshman have no experience, right? And like, players often need experience? Be ause it doesnt seem like you get that. You're acting like throwing a 5 star into a suspension riddled team means auto success

@roaminglion Ohio St let him go because of 6-7 he wanted that job. 5* QB’s come in as freshman and do good at ohio St a few times like Pryor. With the talent ohio St had Braxton Miller was good enough to win 10 games he won 12 the next year undefeated

@southern-psu-fan

So again, just blow right past the coach being fired, multiple starters being sanctioned, and act like it's just like any other time when a true freshman starts.

Because those situations are completely the same.

@roaminglion   Bob won 8 games with a lot more stuff going on and had less talent. Unless the whole first team is suspended at Ohio St you won’t get away with winning 6 games at Ohio St regardless of what the situation is and I’ve got proof, they let Fickell go. That’s the facts roam. It ain’t nothing to try and figure out it’s what happened.

BoB won 8 games with a full roster. No one was suspended and only a few left way before the season. He had all off season to prepare.

Ohio State had 2 months, Fickel was named interm in the offseason and many players were suspended just before the season. NO PLAYERS FROM PENN STATE WERE SUSPENDED AND ALMOST NO ONE LEFT. BoB took over a full roster. You forget that just about everyone stayed and sanctions didnt penalize players, they took away FUTURE scholarships.

Big difference.

Just to clarify, I am talking starters when I say almost no one left. 15 did ultimately leave, most backups or freshman. Far different that losing half your starting offense 2 months before the season.

I think the issue at OSU was they didn't want LF as HC regardless of record; the W/L record gave Admin the out.
