Its been drier than an old whore's hole over here.  I'm hoping Laura comes our way and gives us a squirt.  "Thanks for nothing" is what I used to say to the virgins.

I've never had scrapple with powdered sugar either but that sure sounds good.  Apple butter and maple syrup on top is good.  My uncle once ate it with whipped cream on top.  That was up at deer camp MANY moons ago.  I was a mere lad of 12 when I witnessed that.  Over 60 years later I still remember it like it happend last week.

FT: I do indeed. My wife is better at identifying them than I am. Have you ever tried Chaga tea??  If not I'd recommend it; especially if you're over 50.

Chaga tea, I believe my wife mentioned that before.  As far as mushrooms,  yellow stumpers are the best and they should be out soon.  I will be checking on Friday. Brown stumpers follow the yellow and rams head mushrooms should be sprouting.  They are the only 3 I pick. I can probably fill a pickup truck with them where I go. It's fun to get out and pick them. I might keep a bag or two and give the rest to people who like them but can't get out.

@tsuga Yes, been pretty dry here too. Got just over an inch  yesterday. They say moderate drought, but I've had way less rain through the summer than what they got where they officially measure/record the precip. We're supposed to get rain tomorrow aft/evening "enhanced" by Laura leftovers. We'll see, the weather folks here tend to spread a lot of misinformation.

Whipped cream? To each their own.

I didn't know they had whipped cream way back then .... how sure are you on your recollection?

More like sweetened and whipped pig jizz.

BDC: As I recall he did it on a double dog dare. Coulda been pig jizz, might have explained the look on his face whilst eating it.

Talk about old school dudes. These guys would spit their tobaccy juice in the coal bucket, lean over and touch off the loudest fart you ever heard; and get right back to playing cards. I hunted with three uncles. Two served in the 2nd WW one was a ranger and one was a jarhead. The stories those two told........they definitely WERE from the greatest generation. The camp menu consisted of chili, saurkraut, baked beans, anything that would make them fart. It's no wonder we never saw any deer.

@tsuga The question that begs to be asked, how the hell, was whipped cream in a hunting camp to begin with? You hire a woman to cook?

BT: I'm glad you asked. Come to think of it, I have no idea how it got to camp or who brought it. The third uncle was an Army cook during the Korean. That man made the best damn apple and egg custard pies you ever tasted. Im guessing he made it or had it for them. He baked those pies in an old cook stove. He never hunted as I recall, just went along as the camp cook. This goes back to the late 50's early 60's when we hunted in Perry County, PA.

Hell, come to think of it, all his pies were the best. Ever have ham and bean soup with rivvels??  He made that too.

@tsuga yep I've had hog maw. Not one of my favorites but, I don't dislike it. My Great Grandpa and Grandma had a butcher shop and used to butcher a lot of pigs. Great Gramps used to make me help him. Nothing went to waste! I'll tell ya though, I actually like the Mexican version Menudo better. Smells and tastes a lot better IMO!!

NL: I'll be damned.  I just learned something today.  I honestly never heard of a hand held meat pie before.  I've held a hair pie in my hands in the past; but I digress.

I still think you had the other pasties on your mind when you responded.  And since this whole thing started over whipped cream; why not remove the pasties and apply an ample amount of whipped cream??

My wife takes all my deer steaks and tender loins that are still in the freezer before the beginning each new season and Cold Packs it.  It is what I consider a finger.

1) cube the steak

2) use a cast iron skillet

3) put a little oil in the skillet, get it hot and add the steak and brown for a few minutes

4) add salt and pepper, then a cup of water and add flour a little bit at a time and bring to a boil

5) Cut back the heat to low, let the water evaporate so the steak gets a nice crispy brown layer,

6) turn the steak over, scrape ALL that dark crispy stuff from the bottom of the pan ( leaving in the pan) and add a little more water

7) Repeat 4,5 and 6 several times over the next 6 hours or so....take it easy on too much salt

You can make some warm sandwiches if you want, but I like letting it cool, putting it a plastic sandwich bag and the in the refrig.  Once it is cool, you get nice chunks of very tender meat stuck together and it tastes great cold!!!

Try is some time!  The key is scraping the bottom burnt stuff and flipping it back into the steak....adds great flavor.

I only have log cabin syrup on my scrapple.   The only time we do powder sugar is when we make a burger and top it with egg, scrapple and powder sugar.  I have to have ketchup, so that is where the fries come into play! Fries with malt vinegar and ketchup and a side of old bay.  Need the powder sugar to add something sweet!!

@tsuga Never had ham & bean soup w/ rivvels, mom used to make soup w/ fresh pork parts, potatoes and the extra large home made egg noodles that we called "tire patches" lol Guess the rivvels could be tire "plugs". I like a good helping of spaetzel! Both sets of grandparents sprechen sie Deutsch.

BT,

Translation:

*Yes, I grew up with German speaking Grandparents too.  I wish I had taken the timeto learn a bit more of the language.  I'm not certain I have this right; its ben so long since I've spoken or heard the dialect*

MNL: That sounds pretty damned good.  I'm gonna have to try that.  You reedemed yourself with that post......I was gonna swing down south and west and pick BT up and pay you a visit.  Log cabin syrup??  My God man, what are you thinking??  Use the real stuff.  Besides, you dont mention that sh*t around two old farts that boil their own sap into syrup.....you could cause a heart attack.  Ya need to learn to keep that to yourself, just as SPF needs to learn not to mention fried chicken gizzards in mixed company.......lol

SPF: c'mon man.  You dont know what good eating is. You need to get your butt up here this winter.  We'll go ice fishing, eat fried backstrap marinated in italian dressing and hog-maw smothered in home-made ketsup.  That's good eating brother.  We'll warm ya up with a mug full of mulled cider.
