Wondering if the struggles will continue with teams like Ohio. Desperately trying to find ways to end the game. Will Franklin and staff let Ohio hang around for 3 quarters?  This game should be sealed, done and over well before halftime.  I want to see Clifford on the bench resting in 2nd quarter.

I doubt you will see Clifford on the bench in the 2nd quarter, even Bryce Young was still in the game when Alabama was up 41-0 against Utah State. It's rare to pull a starter before halftime.

I guess it could happen, but I'd doubt it.

QBs like Bryce Young need to pad stats for Heisman chances, not the case with Clifford. Allar should get a series or two with the first unit so he can show his strengths and weaknesses. PSU got burnt last year at Iowa because the back-up was untested.

IMO, JF doesn't want to give DA or any other QB game reps due to potential conflict based on outcomes.

If that were to be true, Jimmy is a real sick ticket.

Maybe Cliff needs to pad his stats for the same reason.  Stranger things have happened.

IMO, Clifford needs to be the QB late in every game ( for now ) until they get that running game well above 150 yards per game consistently! He gets hurt now, the show is over.  He gets hurt later, the show is over.  They are not going to take some Fr QB - now or later in the season - and beat Mich, Sparty and/or Ohio State! The Penn State offense is a "One Man Show" at QB and that is Cliff.  W/O him, it is doomsday in Happy Valley. And it maybe with him if they don't get that running game going sooner than later. If they have any hopes of being a 'Sleeper" this season, then Cliff needs to ONLY be pulled midway through the 4th QTR when the games is out of reach.  Until then, keep that Oline and Cliff in the game and get those running backs some yardage!!!

Again, just my dumb opinion!

@mtnittanylion  never take out the starters unless you know for a fact the game is out of reach. I honestly believe if they’d settle on one stud RB the offense would click. IMO singleton is the best RB on the team.

He already won a Heisman, and Saban doesn't care about him winning another award. He cares about winning.

Just curious, seriously why is everyone passing on Veilleux and Pribula?

@psu61 Because Allar was the #2 for the first game and up to this point Franklin hasn't said either of the other two were #2.

Getting a few snaps late in the 4th quarter with the second or third unit in a blow-out will not adequately prepare the back-up in the event of an injury to Clifford. If you want to get the running backs some yards then Allar can hand off just like Clifford. Gave away last year because we had not back up and Cliff had to play injured. What does everyone else say?

Agree, it would be nice to go into halftime knowing Clifford's day is done. Let Allar (or whoever is #2) get ready at half, and give him reps with the starters for the 3rd quarter.

@roaminglion

Clifford may have had one of his best drives ever against Purdue last Thursday. But he also threw one terrible Pick 6 interception on top of it all. And correct me if I am wrong, but didn't he fumble against Ohio State last year that went for a TD  that cost them THAT game?

Clifford is an above average QB and he is one of top 3 in the BIG10 in my opinion....again, another dumb opinion.  When he gets in the rhythm - like we saw last Thursday night - the kid can do some great things.  During the Covid season, he was out of rhythm at the beginning of the season, found his mojo and then got the team on a winning a track.  He carried that right into the next season, kept that rhythm going until he got hurt at Iowa....and then he just fell apart and really never recovered.  He needs to take the LIONS share of reps this weekend before heading to Auburn.  I don't care if it 40-0 at halftime, they need to run this first team offense until they are jelling like a complete unit!

I have no doubt they are going to come out firing on all 8 cylinders to start this Saturday.....feeding off last weeks accomplishment.  Which BTW, I think is little more than most are giving them.  If Purdue shakes this loss off, they are going to be a factor in the West Division and THAT come from behind win will be looking pretty good in about week 6 or 7.

Here is my point Roam.  I think Penn State played somewhat of a sloppy game against Purdue.  I think Purdue is a lot better than most are giving them right now and Penn State found a way to pull this out...and I realize they got some help from Purdue on this too. Penn States offense and defense matured right before our eyes in the final minutes of that game and I expect to see (  Ohio or not ) a much better performance this weekend. Getting a new QB some reps this weekend is good, but I think Cliff and the Offense needs more work together this weekend before heading to Auburn.  If they can win on the road against Auburn, they come back home against two teams that they should be able to handle.  5 weeks of playing together, 5-0 with a win over Purdue and Auburn on the road??? Yeah, this could what this team needs before squaring off with Michigan and Ohio State!

I am one to roll the dice here!  This is not the time to get a back up QB some reps.  I think the next two weeks are very critical for this team if they have any hopes of contending at any capacity. Clean up last weeks mistakes against Ohio this week, go down to Auburn feeling good about your self and come home with another W.....and then start getting a back up QB some experience before Mich and Ohio State.

Penn State.... 52

Ohio....7 ( maybe )

GO STATE!!!!!

@mtnittanylion I see your logic, and was not saying I want Allar to take over for Clifford. My point was I want to see a well run machine, and if it's 40-0 at half I'd hope the offense was looking that way. If that was the case, I would think they would be in a good place for Auburn.

Mainly I was saying it would be nice to see the offense execute at a high level so they didnt need more work 😀

You and I are on the page!  We need the back up QB - whoever that might be - to get some snaps.  Cliff had to leave the game for a series vs Purdue, so we need somebody to be able to come in,  take a few snaps and keep the momentum going. After that come from behind drive, I felt the Offense gained a lot of confidence and I feel that if they can play a complete game this weekend with little hiccups, that might just be enough to take them up another notch before heading to Auburn.  I think getting through the next two weeks with wins is very important and that the first team - both D and O  - need some quality time on the field together to work out some of the bugs we saw vs Purdue.

Again, I think Penn State beat a good Purdue team.  Maybe I am seeing something differently than most, but I think that win was bigger than than what it appears to be.  Time will tell, but I am convinced Purdue is going to be a real contender in the West division.

Go State!!!!!

Agreed MNL.  I believe the final TD drive as well as the defensive stops at the end of the game are huge confidence boosters and will pay dividends as the season goes on.
