Real question here, is Urban Meyer or Ryan Day good at developing QBs, or are they just really good and recruiting?
Because name one QB either has developed that went on to a good NFL career. Justin Fields? Who knows, to early to tell with him.
However, Joe Burrow is a bonefide premier starter in the NFL, and he had to leave Ohio State to develop and get playing time.
They seem to just bring in talent, surround it with talent, and then underdevelop them. No one coming out of that program seems ready to read NFL defenses at all.
Ohio St is just like Alabama, Georgia, USC and LSU they have so much talent it’s hard to mess up unless you just ain’t a good coach. I can’t figure out what’s wrong with Texas they should be in that group?
No they arent... recent Alabama QBs are starters in the NFL on good teams. OSU cant seem to produce QBs that are successful starters despite the talent.
That was my question.
I think OSU get superior athletes who play QB and you can get away with that in college but not the NFL. That was pretty much what an All American RB from LSU told me years ago. Basically said the difference between AA and NFL for some positions is what's between the ears.
@roaminglion Ohio st has had QB’s go to the NFL and play other positions but regardless, all Ohio St cares about if all the 5* QB’s are good players playing QB at Ohio St and when you recruit 4* and 5* QB’s every year there’s a good chance you’ll win a lot of football games
I guess my answer to your question would be maybe the defenses in the big 10 aren’t as good as most of us though. We’ve said the big 10 needs to be better.

That's my point, they dont develop NFL QBs. We constantly hear about Urban Meyer and Ryan Day being "QB gurus" but really... they arent. They just recruit athletic QBs and dont really prepare them for the NFL at all. At least they havent as of yet.
Justin Fields may pan out, but his first year was not good.
@roaminglion Agree. Meyer never really developed a NFL talent QB anywhere. The closest thing was Alex Smith, who was pretty good in the NFL, but I think he was already at Utah when Meyer was hired.

Thanks! Forgot about Smith and Utah...
I haven't heard of any codicils in any college coach's contracts that get them more money if their players perform well in the NFL. So who cares if they perform in the NFL. College football is not a minor league for the NFL. I know more and more players seem to think it is, but it isn't.
well it ain't like LSU is a bastion of QB development either...Name me a QB to come out of LSU in the last 30 years that was any good in the NFL? I don't think any school has had a real upper hand in developing NFL QB talent...Maybe Oklahoma in recent years but that's about it...Bama has had a couple but I don't think Tua is gonna pan out and I ain't sold on Mac Jones...Billy Boy Bellicheat did a great job of hiding the kid this year...I just thought of Clemson...They brought Watson and Lawrence in...I just don't see a particular program that is churning out QB's every 2 or 3 years in the NFL...

LSU and others weren't being called "QB Gurus" like Day and Meyer. That is my point, people are giving them credit for developing QBs and it doesnt look like they are.

Show me where a coach gets paid for academic success rate or grades of it's players...
But it's still a concern for the job. Anyway, it wasnt an expectation for Meyer or Day, but merely an observation that they seem to get credit for QB development when the results say otherwise.
@roaminglion IMO they’re good college QB coaches but not so much for the NFL. Their QB’s are just great athletes which is good for college football

Been out of the game for over a week now with acute kidney failure brought on by Covid - finally back home, fog starting to clear away so figured these 2 cents haven't been thrown around in a while. I think Roam has a good point which Southern echoed. A true pro style QB that can be successful in the NFL is a very rare commodity, not many come along. That being said, the "good" college coach will put his best athletes in a position to be successful - so if that is the Wishbone offense, then so be it. I've lost my train of thought dangit, hope ya'll pick up what I was trying to laydown.
@bdc I’m glad you’re okay brother! Take care of yourself
@bdc haha I can follow what you're saying as well as I can anyone else's cents worth. Now, what I'm getting, vs what folks are trying to say....that's a whole different ballgame!
Keep on recuperating!
Hang in there BOB...I am praying for ya...Take it easy and wishing you a speedy recovery...
