I don’t know what Indian tribe the name Redskins come from but I do remember years ago that the Indians were honored to have that name with the Washington Redskins. I’m sure there was probably a few that didn’t like it but most were for it. Have they changed their minds or are we acting like a bunch of weak you know what? I personally don’t care one way or the other I’m a dirty bird’s fans or is that offensive 😝. Now I know why this part of the world ain’t mentioned in Revelations....we’ll probably be dead from being weak minded. We ain’t going to stop what’s coming southern so you just might as well just deal with it baby. Like ole billy said in predator...we all going to die lol

From what I read, the logo was designed by a native American and he was proud to have the team associated with native Americans. I think the Washington Redskins should change their offensive name to the DC Redskins. That would get rid of the offensive part.

That's a Hollywood Cowboy. A real cowboy was just a guy who herds cattle, as the name implies. They were mostly Black or Native Americans actually... Hollywood came up with the image of the gun-slinging cowboy we know of today, a lot of it from the stories of Wyatt Earp and the group of criminals who took the nickname "Cowboys".
As for the Redskins, it's not a tribe but a nickname given to Natives... As they referred to them as red skinned, just like white and blacks were talked about using color as well. No real reason they settled on red though, maybe because it was available or some other reason I'm unaware of.
As for the logo, psugrad81 is right... It was designed by Walter Wetzel who was, at one point, the chairman of the Blackfeet Nation. Even his direct descendants disagree on the usage of the name though. In interviews one says it's a source of pride for his family, the other is pissed and calls it an indefensible racial slur. At the time the logo was created, there was no chance of the name being changed. So it seems that he believes his father wanted to at least change the cartoonish racial depictions of the 50's and 60's Redskins mascots into something more "noble". Thus the current logo was made to resemble the buffalo nickel. Baby steps in his opinion.
As for the name, I don't care. It's a sports team, and one that has had a different name before as well. They changed it once, they can change it again. To me, I just don't care. I mean, if someone in the future said having "Nittany" in the title of our sports teams was racist towards Natives I wouldn't agree with them... but I also wouldn't put up such a fuss if the name was changed to just the Lions instead of the Nittany Lions. I mean, at the end of the day I root for the school not the team name.
Why not require sports teams to be named after insects (butterflies, beetles, etc.), fish (trout, salmon, etc.) or flowers (not red roses of course). Could anyone possibly be offended??

I was with ya until you added flowers. There's no way I'd either root or play for a team called the pansies or the buttercups. Gay feathers would also have to be scratched from the list.

The Cowboy originated from Mexico, they were Mexican Vaqueros hired by Ranchers to tend to their live stock as early as the 1500's. Black cowboys came into play as white settlers moved west in the 1800's according to the Smithsonian Magazine. Cowboys were mostly comprised from Mexicans, Blacks, Native Americans and White settlers.

How is red skin derogatory when the current battle cry is Black Lives Matter? Furthermore American Indians don't seem to be so sensitive and PC? If they have a reason to complain its that we stole their land and contained them to the desert. But heck we gave them gambling 🙁
