I agree they played teams that played better defense and they lost. That’s what I was trying to say anyway lol
With many either not liking the RPO, or having issues with it...
...let me point out that all 4 playoff teams ran the RPO offense this year. Clemson and Oklahoma almost exclusively, Alabama for most of it's plays, and Notre Dame about half the time.
Roam, I like the RPO and Southern, I'm for keeping the same offense we've been running - EXCEPT - expand it by adding the capability to run under center when the game & situation dictates. I would think the occasions we would do this would be few and far between, but this added dimension could be a game changer. I was joking about adding a fullback, but wouldn't that be nice?
I’m good with the RPO also. The thing is, you can’t have a DL or LB meeting the ballcarrier at the exchange with the QB because the OL missed their assignment or didn’t identify a stunt. Which brings us back to our original discussion....OL improvement. 😜
Ryan Bates said of Rasheed Walker: "Rasheed has got the potential to be better than I ever was..." Certainly hope that is true!
As for next year, I think a lot of our problems this year were McGovern related. Most missed assignments seemed to come right up the middle, almost always to Menet's right side where McGovern was. I think he never really settled into his new position. I know he played it as a freshman, but he had issues this past year. Hopefully Miranda or someone else steps in and due to being a guard the whole time, is morr confident in their position and assignments.
I don’t disagree Roam, but both guards struggled mightily this year. I still can’t understand why McGovern was moved to guard from center? He played center for the last 2 years pretty well and was the guy making the OL calls, why move him? The coaches overthought it. Leave him at center and let Menet and Miranda battle it out for the RG spot. The OL looked better for the game Menet sat out and McGovern went back to center and Miranda played RG.
There was a game where I saw Gonzo running downfield without engaging anyone like he thought it was a run play except it wasn’t and his guy was running down McSorely untouched. Gonzo also whiffed on as many stunts as anyone. In my opinion, that goes back to their game prep and coaching.
