I was asking this during the live game day chat. Didn’t Limegrover come over prior to Moorhead?? If so, his skill set for producing linemen was not forged in a RPO universe. I want the RPO gone, but if Franklin wants to keep it, then maybe having a line coach that knows that system and has trained linemen for years on how to successfully play in that system is what we need. Like hiring a Spanish Teacher then saying this year, you are teaching the French Class. No similarities to what happened with Corley, but you get my point.
From the people I know in the game, they've told me blocking is blocking... whatever offense you are in the fundamentals are the same. That said, an RPO has more simplistic blocking schemes than most other offenses. A pro style offense, or the one Donovan ran, has fairly complex blocking schemes and many different plays to learn in the running game. That's not the case an RPO style offense, the blocking is pretty straight-forward.
There are plenty of teams out there running the RPO with OLine coaches who had no experience in that system. In essence, a OL coach teaches the guys how to block and the offense being run just tells them where to do it. Pass blocking is pass blocking, and run blocking is run blocking. The only difference in RPO is where to be and what adjustment to make. And in a pro style offense, there's a lot more adjustments, wrinkles, etc. for the line to learn than in RPO.
Forgot to state that on an RPO play, unless something crazy is happening the OLine is run blocking. Just straight up run blocking, no real twists. As I said, pretty straight forward. The only thing a lineman needs to worry about is going more than 3-5 yards downfield if it's a pass.
and usually that doesn't even come into play because in RPO most throws are short, quick throws
Thanks Roam and Bill!
