Definitely
Whether the bar has been lowered or not, in my mind it's about what we do when we get there... not how we get there.
Quick survey...
Would you rather beat Ohio State and then lose yhe first game of the playoff, or lose to Ohio State and win in the playoff?
If Franklin wins 2 games in the playoff, I think that would sufficiently get him out of the "can't win a big game" narrative. 1 wouldn't be enough. He needs at least 2.
@roaminglion I think you’re right two wins in the playoff would get him out of that narrative and the anger the fanbase is feeling would subside but people aren’t going to forget. It might only be a temporary band aid.
I would much rather beat OSU & then let the chips fall where they may. Losing to OSU is now a given and if we make the playoffs, we just might lose the first game we play!
I saw one of the playoff scenarios today that had Indiana at PSU week 1. They had Indiana moving on to week 2. I am sure this will chance 100 times between now and then, but somebody out their believes Indiana is for real.....and better than Penn State. I would love to see Michigan knock them off next week!
James Franklin has won a lot of big games he’s probably just lost more like Coach Day has. The problem is when James Franklin wins a big game it’s not big in your eyes anymore because he beat Ohio St, Washington, Michigan, Utah, USC, Wisconsin plus he had a few huge wins coaching at Vanderbilt. Big wins but after he wins these games they’re not big anymore. It’s BS to say he’s not won big games because he’s has, he’s just lost more.
Losers over the weekend: James Franklin: Sure, this loss isn't going to hurt Penn State's chances of getting into the playoff – they have their cupcake schedule to thank for that one – but who could possibly have any sort of hope they would do anything in it? With Saturday's loss, Franklin fell to 1-7 against top-10 teams at home, 6-10 against ranked teams at home, 1-9 against top-5 teams and 1-10 against Ohio State since he was hired at Penn State. What's the definition of insanity?
I copied this off an article on Fox News sports. Who on here thinks this is true?

I've said this many times. Start scheduling stronger opponents.
@mastert it ain’t Penn States fault WV, USC, Washington and UCLA is average football teams but don’t forget that ole southern told you these teams would struggle playing in the big 10. They are struggling and we struggle to score against these teams that’s why I know for a fact we have a QB problem. I can see it watching the games we win these games because the rest of the team is studs at almost every position. We’ve got a stud QB he’s riding the pine just like McSorely did. You can’t wear the defense down if you’re having a bunch of 3 and outs.
A bowl game isnt a big game. They were before the playoff, now they are participation trophies. Who gives a rip if he beat Utah with both teams having starters opt out. It meant nothing.James Franklin has won a lot of big games he’s probably just lost more like Coach Day has. And don't make me laugh... "He beat USC". So now beating a 4-5 team is a big game?
He beat Ohio State in 2016, and won the Big Ten championship. He's won no big game vs anyone good since.
Don't forget you said Oregon would struggle too. All of us said Washington is a shell of their former team, with a complete roster turnover. No one though UCLA was any good.@mastert it ain’t Penn States fault WV, USC, Washington and UCLA is average football teams but don’t forget that ole southern told you these teams would struggle playing in the big 10. " it ain’t Penn States fault WV, USC, Washington and UCLA is average football teams"
Yeah, and you don't get to call thrm "Big Wins" because of the name. USC isn't a big win, it's a win against a 4-5 team.
@roaminglion before we played USC some of y’all were saying it was a big game. We win and now it’s not a big game. When we beat Michigan it ain’t a big game but when we lose to Michigan it’s a big game. It’s hard to beat Ohio St and Michigan when the refs throw flags every time we get any momentum going. Look at Ohio State record in big games against the SEC when they don’t have the big 10 refs, it stinks.
I said this system will be good for Oregon because they can pay players now is what I said.
The problem as I see it is with this "system" everyone can pay players now, only some can afford to pay them more than others!
I said this system will be good for Oregon because they can pay players now is what I said.
seriously? You think Roam and I are going to buy that BS after you preached from late winter into summer that all west coast teams suck and they were going to get their asses kicked?
You specifically said Oregon sucks, can’t hang with the big dogs and would not beat OSU.
“I’m not sold on them like you guys are”
SOS argument etc is kinda interesting in that, Bama et al get hammered for bullshit schedules but when it comes to play, they put up. Bottom line is some teams are just built psychologically and physically to win, and others are not one way or the other; that goes for the coaching staff even more so. There really is a difference between perennial power houses and the rest of the lot.
@psujoe I said the PAC 12 sucked and it did suck. I’ve never said Oregon sucked I called them a light weight because they’ve they’ve never won a NC and they was a light weight. I also said since they can pay players now that will make them better because they are loaded with money and money usually wins. Oregon was an okay football team and never has been a powerhouse. With money that might can change and I’m on record here saying that. Over the last 50 years the PAC 12 had one dominant team and that USC Oregon was just an average lightweight at best.
It was a big game, until they lost two in a row. Then we were playing an unranked team. So yeah, people said it was a big game 3 weeks before we played it, then a week before guess what? No one called it a big game. They said it was a must win game.@roaminglion before we played USC some of y’all were saying it was a big game. We win and now it’s not a big game. I was always afraid of the Nike $ at Oregon. Then you have the UnderArmor $ at MD.
Wait till ESPN decides to do NIL...
@underlion exactly! Money usually wins that’s why We Penn St fans better step up and help pay if we want to win if we have too. Hopefully Penn St has some big money people but if they don’t I’m willing to chip in.
IMO, a lot of the chatter about OL, DL, QB, WR, is really a reflection of symptoms vs root cause (actual problem); typically in problem solving, there are two tracts: 1)ID the real problem and then intervene or 2) treat the symptom/s believing that is the real problem. If you are treating the same symptoms over and over, you are not solving the problem. With that model, what's the real problem to all the symptoms talked about for the past several years?
Those are getting fixed until the elephant gets fixed, who/what is the elephant?
First of all Penn State needs to win out (and they should)...They will host a playoff game...Franklin needs to win that one and another one to save his job in my opinion...#2 I don't wanna see interconference games week 1 of the playoffs...NO B1G vs B1G or SEC vs SEC etc...That is what the conference games are for...I agree that Franklin should be on the hot seat...I have no idea what the rumblings are out there and if he is even on the hot seat but he sure as hell should be...
