Why are some cigars so expensive, especially the Cubans? What is the mad science behind it that makes some cigars expensive, some cheap.

Isnt it ironic that in a different thread there has been discussion about a guy that has been verbally abusive to other posters in the past, and then along comes this guy slamming another member.

I will do my best to answer your question Pipe...The question regarding why are cuban's so expensive is an easy one to answer...Cuban cigars are embargoed so they are illegal to possess in this country...If you travel abroad and attempt to bring in Cuban cigars they will be taken from you if they are discovered when you come back into the U.S.A. through customs...As a result they are rare and expensive...Cuban cigars were once considered the finest in the world but when Castro seized control of Cuba many of the best tobacco farmers and cigar rollers fled Cuba and came to Miami, Tampa and Honduras...The Cuban tobacconists have discovered that esteli, Nicaragua has the closest soil composition and climate to Cuba in the world and as a result many of the Cuban tobacconists, farmers and Rollers have settled there and are making fine cigars...In my opinion the 2 prevailing factors in a cigar is the type of tobacco and the cigar roller...The costs of a cigar are determined by the tobacco's used and the quality of the roll...The tobacco determines the taste of the cigar and it's strength...Some tobacco's are mild and some are full bodied...The cigar wrapper is the most important tobacco in the cigar as it is the tobacco that comes in contact with the cigar smoker...The binder determines much of the flavor...The quality of the roll determines how even the cigar burns and also how slowly it burns...Proper cigar storage also is important as you want to keep your cigars properly humidified...When we have our steak dinner next month I will bring a variety of cigars to show you the differences and what they mean...Hope that clarifies things for you Pipe...

Wow, Interesting. Never knew that. They don't seem rare and I didn't know they are banned from US soil. This is all news to me.

There are many impostors/or manufacturers make their description sound like they're Cuban made. They (US gov) shut things down again in Sept. 2020.
Just prior to covid my wife and I drove to Niagara on the Lake Ontario Canada, only 3 hours from Erie depending on how long it took to cross over the bridge to Canada. We stopped at a smoke shop and the proprietor told us its legal to bring Cubans to the USA but only 5 (not sure the exact number) as long as it is for your personal consumption. We claimed the cigars upon entering USA customs and told the young agent what the cigar store owner told us, he smiled and said "I didn't know that" but let us through anyway. To this day I'm not sure what the real story is. I don't remember what I bought but they were a very fine smoke.
I am not a cigar guy, but when my father in law and I go to away games, our van looks like the movie Up in Smoke with Cheech and Chong! This guy is firing them up every hour! Being an old wrestler (as I told you), I just never had the urge to smoke much.....dip is is another story!
A friend of mine from work boyfriend is a cigar rep. She sent me about a dozen or so of what I guess were really expensive cigars. Hand wrapped tight and oiled well?? Something to that effect! Like $40 retail each? Whatever the case, I know they didn't burn my throat and lungs when I inhaled them. I gave most of them to my father in law and he had one......didn't like them as much as his Philly Blunts!
Go Figure!!! LOL

dip for losing weight right? spitting?
For what it's worth: https://help.cbp.gov/s/article/Article-82?language=en_US
per the above customs and border;
Persons subject to United States jurisdiction may purchase or acquire Cuban-origin merchandise, including alcohol and tobacco products, while in a third country for personal consumption outside the United States.
You can try it, but it sounds like they can confiscate them.
