See Link. In the beginning, they flash a stat saying PSU blitzed on 42 percent of all downs last season. For any coaches on this site, is that high? And I assume that percentage will go up this season since organic pressure might be hard to come by with Shaka, Oweh gone and Adisa hurt, right? Anyway, the video is a cool watch.
42% blitz rate is very high in college football and a very high rate for the NFL as well...Your assessment is right on in my opinion as if you can't get pressure from your defense edge rushers or up the middle your only alternative to create pressure is to blitz...
Also, if you blitz that frequently, your opponent knows it's coming and can plan accordingly!
I have to say that I’m not a fan of Pry’s blitz packages most of the time. As Bob said, they can be very predictable. He sends a DB frequently, and the opposing QB immediately picks up the hot receiver on a slant for a decent gain. The issue, as has been discussed, is that the front 4 aren’t getting pressure consistently. However, if the secondary is as good as everyone thinks it is going to be this year, then if those guys lock down their coverage it will allow more time for the DL to get pressure. Or, Pry gets more creative. I’m just not a fan of his secondary blitzes. I can recognize it from my couch.
As a result of these blitz "schemes" you have guys running 15 yards thru the middle of the field wide open...I agree with all of your assessments...It had become predictable 2 years ago and these teams have now prepared and schemed for his "packages"...I am not a fan of his defensive play calls and hope he does something different this season...As always time will tell...
