Did y’all see that article on espn about the Penn St player being a rapist and a killer and the dude died in prison. The article is way to long for me to read but I did scam through it and joe Suspended the dude then kicked him off the team after he got in trouble a few times. We can’t torture people in this country even when they might deserve it so all you can do is punish people according to the law. Just trying to paint joe being a bad guy I guess. Ain’t no way all that crap that’s in that article got covered up from what little I read and I read it for 20 minutes and it put me to sleep because the article is so long. We’ll, the dude is dead and if he’s guilty of all they say I promise you he’s been dealt with.

For the record I believe the dude is guilty that’s why he went to prison and thank goodness they never let this scumbag out. I was 10 years old and didn’t watch the news so I don’t remember any of this but maybe some of y’all do?

Did you read that too? Retaliation in those days didn't exist.  Times have changed. Joe Pa made it clear that  testimony by fellow teammates would be a call for being kicked off tge team and that's just what happened.  If those statements are true then Joe pa wasn't a very nice guy. Have you heard the other news in the last year about 2012 and before? The waters are still murky and bigger news may be out in the near future about pre 2012.

I scanned the article about Todd Hodne (linebacker on the 1997 and 1978 teams).  First off, never heard of him.  So he must of been a reserve player.

Paterno kicked him (Hodne) off the team after he was convicted of sexual assault.  According to another player (Tony Capozzoli), Paterno also kicked Capozzoli off the team for testifying in Hodne's defense.  Capozzoli claims Paterno told 3 players who had been called to testify that "Well, you got to tell the truth the best you can."  But later in the article, Capozzoli says that Paterno also stated to the 3 players "'Todd Hodne is guilty, and if you testify for him, you're off the team."  Capozzoli says that Paterno left him (Capozzoli) go for that reason.  And at the end of the article, Capozzoli says "To a fault, [Paterno] put the program ahead of everything else."

The article states that Hodne allegedly committed violent crimes over 30 years.  He finally got convicted of the murder of a cab driver in 1987 at roughly age 30.  So the statement that he "committed violent crimes over 30 years" is a bit of an exaggeration since he suggests he started committing those crimes as an infant if we take it literally.  But clearly he committed crimes over an extended period of time.

The article does point out multiple examples where Hodne got away with things and was not held fully accountable for during his life.  Not just at Penn State but everywhere.  So I take the article to be more of a condemnation for how society handles people like Todd Hodne than it being strictly a condemnation of Paterno and Penn State football.

@blushoes  I don’t believe anything espn says because they are paid to say what they say just like all the other news outlets rather it’s politics or sports which espn has become political. The only people that really can cover something up is the media, police and government and if this was a cover up it’s the police who covered it up not joe. It’s hard to cover something up when 20 or 30 people know about it regardless of the situation. Most crooks get caught because they can’t keep their mouth shut they always got to tell somebody something. Unsolved cases are the people that did keep their mouth shut that’s why they didn’t get caught. Had a buddy that got in a fight on I-20 back in 1997 and Ricky shot and killed the guy gotta way with it up till 2018 I believe when his brother got divorced his sister in law went and ratted him out but if he’d kept his mouth shut when all of it went down he wouldn’t be in jail right now. I’m not defending Ricky I’m just saying.

If anything, I read it as how people can have way off base interpretations of someone's motives.

For instance, I found it very interesting that Paterno called one of the women and asked her questions, and she took that as him wanting to protect the player and program. However, his actions and account of players are vastly different, resulting in him stating they better not testify for the guy, that he knows he's guilty, and anyone who tries to help him will be off the team.

I also think articles like this are just ridiculous for always including: "We reached out to XXXXXX University for comment..." WHY? This happened over 40 years ago, is there anyone even at the University in an official capacity who was there, or for that matter even knows about it? Or are you just including that line to make it sound like they don't want to talk?

@cohappy I have a question for you. What does ESPN cover, sports or amusement parks? Why should ESPN be concerned with what Disney does. Personally I was glad and sad to hear about Todd Hodne. Glad because I like to know things that I didn't know before and sad because of what he did. I read most of the story and the guy seemed like a complete loser. Joe kicked him off the team for a year for a non rape activity (burglary) but gave him a chance to correct the behavior. Now Joe was a great coach but he did not have the ability to see into the future. He did believe in giving players a second chance. I am not so sensitive that I saw this story as an attack on PSU and/or Joe. I do not know what motivated the reporters to do the story but I am glad it came out.

@psugrad81  I agree 81. I’m sure there’s a lot of punk football players that go to jail from other teams that did some awful things but we don’t hear about it because we don’t pay attention to other teams. You gotta give people second chances or we’re all doomed. Every once in a while giving somebody a second chance will bite you in the butt but most of the time giving people a second or even a third chance works out great.

Why doesn't ESPN talk or write about some of JoePa's second chance success stories like Bobby Engram who was kicked off the team foe 1 year or even Matt Millen who JoePa stripped of his captaincy!

Surely that has to just be a total coincidence. I'm sure, I'm sure. Well maybe not that sure.

I wouldn't be surprised if they bring in the "illustrious" Sara Ganim as narrator and "wiretap" Jones to offer color commentary!

Typo in my original post. Todd Hodne was a linebacker on the 1977 and 1978 teams, not 1997 and 1978 as originally typed.  Sorry.

@psugrad81  I agree with a lot of what you say.  To me, the sad part of this story is that people seem to focus on "Joe Paterno" and his alleged faults in handling Todd Hodne instead of how poorly the legal system all over the place handled Todd Hodne.

A judge lets him out after being convicted of sexula assault instead of sending him to jail awaiting sentencing?  Really?

Hodne gets minimum sentencing after committing multiple attacks?  Really?

But its Paterno's fault because he should have done "more".  Really?  I thought law enforcement and the justice system had that role.

To show you how others outside Penn State are reacting to this article, there were 84 comments about it on "Pantherlair", the Pitt sports website.  Only 2 comments were made about law enforcement shortfalls and the judicial system failing these women.  The other 82 comments were jabs at Paterno and Penn State, with an intermixing of comments like "LOL.....KDKA is on it now!! This should be fun. It will now start making the rounds locally."

Sad that the biggest part of this story is often being overlooked.

You were the kingpin in this post. No offense,  but sometimes it's best to steer away from these topics.

We won't know more until Monday.  I believe ESPN wants to know more about retaliation. Your testimony is a kick in the ass off the team.  That opens up the can of contaminated worms.

@southern-psu-fan

ever hear of a loaded statement? Leaves open doors for many unanswered questions. Why would a major sports network be scumbags for following up on a story? They carry and cover football,  drag racing, motocross, boxing, mixed martial arts. They cover all stories, not just PSU. Adam Schefter was the last story I read in November.  I live in SE Pennsylvania. Southern Pennsylvania is beautiful area when you get closer to Maryland.  If that's where you are from.

@blushoes  There’s a reason why espn has had to let a lot of people go and it’s not because they just cover sports!
