Thankfully I don't think the defensive issues have anything to do with talent or lack there of...The problems that I saw upon reviewing the tape was blown coverages, Linebackers making bad reads and being out of position and poor tackling...From a pure talent standpoint this might be the most athletic and talented defensive unit I have seen in a long time...The key will be how long it takes for all of this talent to gel into a formidable defensive unit? There is a ton of youth at key spots and it is going to take these kids a bit of time to adjust...I remember the job this staff did a couple of years back and have no reason to believe we won't see similar improvements from week to week with this group of young men...Is there work to do? of course there is a ton of work to be done with this group of players...What is encouraging to me is the level of talent, speed and athleticism that they have on the field...The problems with this unit has nothing to do with talent as they have all the talent in the world...The problems stem from inexperience and gaining familiarity with this system...I for one can't wait to see how much improvement there will be this week from the defensive unit...I was not a happy guy last night but after watching the tape a couple of times I am optimistic that this could be one of the better defenses we have seen from a Penn State ballclub in a long time...
Also the FD we were missing Givens plus Buchholz and Brown are gone from the defense, they just got wore down in the 2nd half. You’ll see a better defense this week with Givens back. App St is no pushover and they are a very fast team with a QB that makes good decisions. I’m just satisfied we won brother.
a ton of missed assignments and misreads Southern...Please don't get me started on the piss poor tackling....this isn't a talent issue but an experience and preparation issue...
