Boxing is only seen in urban low income areas. No normal parent lets their child anywhere near the sport. Boxing is also big in third world countries.
With all the focus on brain injuries, is football headed in the same direction as boxing. More middle and upper class communities are seeing a measurable drop in their football participation numbers. Has anyone done a study on the social and economic makeup of NCAA football players? How many educated parents think football is a worthwhile experience for their children?
I’m not sure a helmet will ever be developed that will 100% prevent concussions.
Is it a matter of time until the liberal forces in our country decry those that enjoy while privilege paying expensive ticket prices watching African American athletes bash their brains in for the entertainment of others?
I think it’s unfair to say no “normal” parent would allow their child to participate in boxing. In low income communities it’s an acceptable and honorable way of keeping kids off the streets and potentially a career ( though rare). MMA is worse as a blood sport yet attracts participants from all communities.

Once again, Sky, you show your true colors. You just can’t help yourself. You have tried for awhile now to interject your narrow minded political, discriminatory view of things. This kind of outlook is sad. It’s 2019 and you are living in the 1950’s or earlier.
Caven, you should not tolerate this kind of nonsense. Sky should have been banned from posting here months ago. He tries to interject politics into almost every post. I told you guys a long time ago that talking politics would ruin this message board, yet here is the topper for him. This kind of nonsense is why I stopped posting here a few months ago. If you guys are ok with this kind of post and condone it, I feel bad for you all. This message board will quickly become a cesspool if you tolerate this. This isn’t appropriate for a football board and these posts reflect poorly on the PSU community.
I think Sky does have a point, he's not wrong that low-income areas are more likely to play football than high-income areas...
However, I don't think that's anything outside the normal. it's always been the case that high-income areas have gravitated towards other sports other than football, although right now with the brain injury issues it seems to be exacerbated.
That said, just stating it and then trying to make it out like it's a bunch of white privileged people who want to watch African Americans kill themselves... is a bit much Sky.
Maybe this post should have been in the Water Cooler. Anyway, I find it interesting that some see this as political. I see it as a sociological analysis of the changing demographics of sport. All one needs to do is look at PSU’s 1960 team picture and compare it to this year’s group. Take a look at who is paying high ticket prices and who is playing on the field when Michigan comes to town.
I met Joe Lewis years ago. He was a greeter at a Las Vegas casino. He could barely remember his name. Today Tony Dorset is among many former players chasing demons likely caused from being hit on the head.
Regardless of what you think of my post, the fact remains that the number of middle class and upper class kids playing football is declining. And the money it costs to watch major college football continues to increase.
I agree Roam. Maybe I’m just in left field but I don’t see what the big deal is in politics. Maybe it’s just a northern thing lol...just kidding y’all calm down lol

Silence a view that you disagree with! I don’t know if I should laugh or feel sorry for you. Although silencing critics has kept many dictators in power!

Of course you don’t see what the big deal is. You have no issues interjecting your political view at any time on here or any other forum. This is a football board, not a political board. You seem to think everyone has right to their opinion... as long as it lines up with your way of thinking. You basically said that exact thing in another forum.
This I will agree with. The greed of King and other promoters ruined boxing.

You are right, dictators will silence their critics. Like the media etc. Funny, seems like there’s an attempt to do that now. Dictators require forced patriotism too. Scary.
You always interject your political view and act as though that’s not what you meant when you get called out on it. The topic of football participation being down has been discussed here before and several of us have said it is probably due to the general public being more educated to head injuries. For some reason, you want to look at the race aspect of it. Not sure why? You probably are right regarding the despairity between African American participants and caucasian participants, however, your reasoning for it is a real head scratchers. Sorry, I apparently don’t see the world the same way you do. Further, you tend to like to use words like “liberals” in many of your posts, but claim it isn’t political. I’m calling BS. You know exactly what you are doing. The only common thing on this board when it started was Penn St athletics. Why divide the board with politics?

Actually yes, The Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport with the DeVos Sport Business Management Program in the College of Business Administration from University of Central Florida published the below report in 2017, link attached.
You might be surprised at the results! Of the total 2017 student-athletes in all of Division I football, 44.2 percent were African-American, 41.5 percent were white, Latinos were 2.9 percent, Asian/Pacific Islanders represented 1.7 percent and Native-Americans represented 0.4 percent. Student-athletes identified as two or more races or “other” totaled 3.6 percent.
I refer you to page 49 & 50 of the report which lists the racial percentages of Basketball, Football and Baseball participants from the 1991-92 season all the way up to the 2016-17 season.
I believe we get what we vote for and we live in the best country in the world so both parties are doing something right. I pull for whoever is in charge brother. Just between me and you I really like the dude John Delaney I think he would be a great president and if somebody takes Trump down I hope it’s him. If you know how he thinks you know how I prettty much think. I will pull for whoever wins regardless who it is because that way I’m always on the winning side. I love to win baby and that’s just the truth.
Navylion, I heard on sports talk in Atlanta that kids signing up for football was way up around here. We have so many teams now that you can’t keep up with all of ‘em. My kids played football and did wrestling.
Yep same here, and down here in Jacksonville there is no disparity between races or economic status when it comes to youth football through high school football.
