I thought this was worthwhile posting on the football thread as it affects all sports. Thus, I don’t pretend to know much about basketball whether college, NBA or high school but I’m interested in hearing everyone’s thoughts on the scandal. It seems many think the problem would go away if only the colleges paid athletes in the revenue producing sports. My problem with that is 2 fold: 1. Only wealthy schools will have the resources to attract top talent. Maybe it’s that way already but less obvious. 2. Resources directed to the big 2 sports take away from lesser sports and that would include my beloved wrestling. You have to know if schools are going to pay for men’s basketball, women’s basketball isn’t far behind as well as women’s softball, men’s cross country, rowing and so on. Thoughts?
They are getting paid. To the amount of a free education, free room and board, the opportunity to gain skills and knowledge that should afford them a nice life after college and sports. Depending on where they go to school that could amount to a few hundred thousand dollars. If they choose to take full advantage of the opportunity, then both sides benefit from the scholarship agreement. If they don’t, that’s on them. Nobody is forcing them to take the scholarship. If they think it’s a raw deal, then they can decline it and take out school loans and work part-time jobs to pay for it like the rest of us did. This topic frustrates me. Paying them is ridiculous. They are getting “paid” already. And I agree with you, the most visible sports will benefit the most, so how does the school handle less visible sports getting paid?
They're already being compensated with a free education (in most cases),free room and board, a spending stipend, and being jet-setted all over the country. When is enough enough?
Back in my day I had to walk in frigid temps, uphill both ways, just to get to our unheated schoolhouse. Don't hear me complaining do you?
Ya well, you think you had it tough? At least you had shoes to make that long walk. In my day we had to wrestle a bear on our way to school, convince it to give up its fur then fashion shoes out of it just to make it through 5 feet of snow.....in July.
How about the custom meals they are served and custom workouts these would cost hundreds a month if they had to pay for them
I cant top that one lake. You Erie boys had it rough!
After being beat over the head a couple of times by Murray and Roam I’ve changed my mind on paying players money but I still have a problem with the money these coaches are making, I think there needs to be a salary cap on college coaches and if they don’t get one the walls are going to come down one day rather it’s fair or not fair because people see these coaches making all this money and most people think the players are getting screwed it’s that simple and the outcry is only going to get louder. Maybe if the coaches had a salary cap of 2 million the schools could give all the other sports the same scholarship as football players get that way the schools can say every student athlete is treated the same? I don’t know how to fix it because it’s way above my pay grade but they better do something or it’s all going to come down if they don’t, this is a different generation of punks today, they think everything should be free lol BTW Nick Saban would still coach if he was making 2 million and so would JF, if they want more then go to theNFL
Now I’m looking at it from the ‘ it’s not fair opinions” lol^^^^
The other sports get the same scholarships that football gets. The only difference is they are allowed to break theirs up into halves if they wish, one half to this person and another half to the other.
Who told you they get different scholarships?
Maybe they are the same but there are far fewer to go around. That’s why they split them up. For instance, wrestling gets 9.9 scholarships. They have 10 starters. That would be like football getting 21.9 scholarships. As we all know, football currently gets 85 so even some guys on the 3 deep are getting a free ride.
Nobody told me anything Roam I just remember you saying football players getting more perks while they are on scholarship. I’m saying make everything equal that way nobody can complain even though they probably will lol
Here are some other issues. How will the NCAA handle this humongous scandal? What sort of punishment will be handed down to each of the 20 schools involved? Will there be different levels of punishment based on each school’s involvement ? How will the huge March Madness NCAA tournament look with so many of the premier BB schools being punished? I personally think the NCAA is toothless in this and it might be the start of major changes in the NCAA if not the dissolution of that institution beginning with basketball and football.
The only March Madness I care about is the NCAA Wrestling Championships. They can cancel that other overdone tournament and I wouldn’t even notice.
Disregard the format of the last post. I have no idea how I did that?
I whole heartedly agree. About the stylings of your post, very artistic.
Thanks, but I am about as far from artistic as it gets
I just think the NCAA has no idea on how to go forward with this. Everything is out of control, the schools, recruits, families, agents, NBA, sporting good companies...anything within the supply chain. It was really easy for them to bully when it was just Penn State or at least it started out that way. They don’t know how to deal with Michigan State and now there is this.
Just to throw in another level of craziness. College hockey players, many times, have already played in juniors and possibly were already drafted. College baseball players can have agents. It is interesting that you don’t hear about scandals with those sports. I’m sure they are there, but it isn’t out in the media.
Hmmm, that is true, hadn’t thought of that.
That's a very simplistic way of looking at it, considering 40 to 50 players can play in the games. Special teams adds to the number of "starters" on the team, so it isn't just 22. Kickers, punters, the fact that 2nd string at many positions play in games in rotations.
Nothing like that exists in wrestling. 10 starters, 10 wrestle in a match. Done.
Similar to Football, saying Basketball has 5 starters and just going off that doesn't hold water either. 8-9, sometimes 10 players routinely contribute in games. The sports are wildly different in that respect.
For wrestling not exactly as simple as 10 weight classes for 10 scholarships. Coaches are looking to build room debth as well as the next man up when guys graduate. They are always looking for ways to build a room working with 9.9 schollies. For instance, freshman stud Mason Manville is on an ROTC scholarship and doesn’t count toward the 9.9. Fortunately some kids come from families that can financially afford to be there an opt to be there just because it’s Cael (or somewhere). McKinney from Ohio State (transfer from Stanford) family is very wealthy. Of course family assets don’t always apply.
Service academies are biggest perpetrators of pay to play. Not only do they pay for school, room and board, they pay the kid while he/she attends school and plays the sport. In addition, they guarantee the student athlete a job immediately after graduation. If Alabama or anOhio State paid a player while playing football and then guaranteed a player a job upon graduation, imagine the furor. The student does not get free clothing-the clothing the student gets is paid for by the student.
This article gives some info on the cost of walk ons. Pennies add up.

My point is "depth" in both sports is fairly different. In wrestling it is practice depth, or guys waiting their turn to get in matches.
In football depth is guys rotating into actual games, and making contributions during the match.
The balance issue is more towards men and women. All sports outside of football, women have more scholarships then men. It isn't 1-1 in basketball, as the women get more. This happens because women don't play football, so they need to balance the opportunities.
To me, this smacks as "fairness" dressed up as equality. Equal would be both sports getting the same number of scholarships. Fair is giving women more in each sport because they don't play football. The old joke goes: "What's the difference between equality and fairness???? Equal is telling both a tall and short guy to jump over a wall, fair is giving the short guy a bench to climb on first"
roam, Your simplistic observation on wrestling scholarships is way off. If you only give money to the starters how do you recruit new guys every year to replace those starters? It isn’t “10 matches, 10 starters, done.”
Hey , you know what they should do? Pay them all! Problem solved. Everyone would be happy. What could possibly go wrong? Then they could jack the tuition up so all the academic kids could pay for the athletes. Perfect. As I said, if they don’t like their situation, don’t accept it.
