@roaminglion I don’t know what populism is and I’ve never heard any Republicans say they were populism’s but we know who the wannabe socialists are because they admit who they are but they claim to be democrats and they’re not democrats. I call ‘em wannabe socialists because if they really had to live under socialism they wouldn’t want to be socialists. 1. You're confusing socialism with dictatorships. Cuba, Venezuela, etc. were/are dictatorships masquerading as socialism. Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and others are examples of socialistic countries that do very well.
2. Populism is when leaders and people start railing against the establishment, call "the elite" corrupt, and that the country is under attack from "other people". In simple terms, everyone who is against the populist leader is corrupt, an enemy, and trying to keep "regular folk" down. Populism often confuses patriotism with nationalism.

Here is a hint: If the country is calling itself socialist (I.E. China, Venezuela, Cuba), they are just pandering to the masses to gain control. Calling yourself a socialist doesnt make you one. Nordic cou tries actually follow a set of socialist philosopies, while China and Cuba just say it as lipservice.
@southern-psu-fan All that said, I prefer our system so I am not a socialist. I dont want to be Sweden any more than I want to be China. In many ways countries like Sweden & Canada are able to support more social platforms because they dont have to build up militarily. Sure, they have a military... but nothing like ours. They know we will protect them from the likes of Russia and China.
So for them it's easier to support public programs with money they would otherwise be using for protection.
