Got the first plowable snow this morning with more on the way tomorrow. Deer season starts on Saturday for Main residents and then on Monday it open to both residents and out of staters. Moose season was pretty successful up here, the grouse cycle is on an upswing, and now we have a tracking snow for Saturday. Looking good up here boys
Good luck with that buck!
I was able to guide a couple of hunters on a moose hunt a few weeks ago. Long story short, they each got smallish bulls but we called one monster in and had it within 50 yds with no clear field of fire. Instead of waiting for it to come into the open one of the hunters in our group hit a cow call that sounded more like the horn on a semi and that old bull took one step backward, spun around and just drifted away into our memories. They were a group of Jersey hunters that bought a call at Walmart, never used it before, and screwed up on the bull of a lifetime. This bull's spread was in the 48-54" range. His rack was all palms with a several small tips on the ends.......that's indicative of an older bull. I've been back up in that area a few times since and havent seen a trace of him.
Had a good moose season, I was able to guide four hunters and their "groups" and we bagged 3 bulls and a cow. Up here you can transfer your tag to another member of your group and they can take the shot at the moose. Pretty much nobody does that unless its a father to child type of thing.
Bottom line, they were happy. Pretty sure I'b be happy with a small bull too, since that would be my 1st. Bummer about Bullwinkle though.
Ya know, I think you should get FD and Suzy together for a moose hunt!
Ha!!! That would be a hoot. If that would happen, I'd need you up here as a referee. FD smoking cigars and drinking adult beverages and Suzy making us turkey bacon and eggs in the morning. Although I wouldnt mind taking FD up on his offer of a fine steak dinner. Seriously though, its pretty remote up here and easy to get turned around......much like your Adirondacks down in your neck of the woods. If you got a minute, google Geraldine Largay. She got lost up here and was found dead two years later in a tent. Pretty tragic story. We searched and searched for her but came up empty handed each time. She was a thru hiker on the AT and apparently didnt know how to read a map or use a compass. She got off the trail to go to the bathroom and never found her way back. What a way to go.......
I invited SPF up here ice fishing several times but he keeps turning me down......wonder why??
You'd think SPF would jump at the chance to fish w/o any bugs chomping him! We did have ice on the buckets yesterday morning here. Took Li'l Suzy wine tasting for the day. lol At 95 lbs, she doesn't last long.
For some reason, they lose more people during black fly season in the 'dacks. I know the bugs get tough, but no worse than the sand fleas at PI. haha Or doing PT in the sand spurs.
Hoping for a win this aft. Go State!!!
