I think grouse are my favorite eating game bird, followed closely by turkey. Still a little leafy down here to offer much of a shot for grouse. Turkey season is a few weeks off yet.  Spent yesterday aft knocking down trees for next year's firewood. Allegedly it dries down quicker if you take them down w/ the leaves on, which sort of makes sense.

Took my little Suzy up to Altmar to watch the salmon come up the fish ladder. Surprised that I didn't run into Niccy, since (s)he said (s)he likes to salmon fish up here. But then, (s)he may have stopped "fishing" when they outlawed snagging the salmon.

I'd have to say Grouse, Pheasant, and then Turkey. I've heard the same thing about cutting down with leaves on too. Ha, till I get around to cutting it,it's usually dry anyway. I just now finished up this winter's wood a few weeks ago. I used to have it all cut and put up by the 1st week in April. I've slowed down a bit over the years.......lol

Ha! It's been so long since I've eaten pheasant, can't remember what it tastes like. They try to stock 'em around the house, but the tame birds just end up as fox food.

Yep, that's about the way I work my wood supply. Every spring I tell myself, I WILL have it in the barn before Black fly season...before the mosquitoes come out....before the deer flies start...before it get too freakin' hot to breath....by August, damn it! Now I block it up, stack it in the woods and tarp it. That way at least it's dry when I get around to splitting.

We've been burning for about a week and a half now.  How about you??  I was hoping to scare a few grouse this morning but my better half has her never ending "hunny do" list to complete.

I have a pretty good bird dog that usually gets me two or three flushes every time we go.  Its the same routine, he hunts, locates, and flushes and then hears a load bang as the grouse flies away.  Every now and then one flies into my shot pattern and drops and the dog looks back at me with a "was that supposed to happen" look on his face.

Yeah, week and a half sounds about right. Hit or miss for the most part, but the past couple of rainy days has got me starting a fire every night.

haha Yep, that's about the way I shot too. If I have time to think, I miss. If I just shoulder it and pull the trigger, I have dinner.

They also stocked trout in the river Mon.  Woodies in the morning-Trout in the afternoon-more Woodies in the evening if needed.  This is as GOOD as it gets.

12 pt. 22" spread. 202lbs dressed. I couldn't drag it out. It took me 45 minutes to drag it 30 yds. Had to call a grandson and son-in-law to help.

Nice buck!!! lol that's why I cut tractor trails around my woods (in my younger days), throw it in the bucket, drive home.  Got lucky enough to have a drumlin in the middle of the property, trail across the top and along both sides. If/when you have to drag it's either less then 50' of level drag or down hill. Usually you can drive right up to it. Hang/skin it from the bucket too.

Thats pretty much the way i have it here.  Only problem was, it didnt shoot him here I was on a neighboring property when i shot it.  I'd been playing cat and mouse with this one for three years before I shot him.  In 2016 he was actually a heavier deer and his spread was much wider.  I have another nice on that goes about 250lbs on the hoof and im hoping to cross paths with him some day.

You guys should have seen the bull moose that darn near hit my truck this morning.  Im guessing it went around 800-900 with a 40" spread.  It came flying out of the woods and when it hit the road it ran parallel to my truck for about 20 yards.  I'd really like to see whatever chased him out of the woods!!
