Good luck to ya if you're going out tomorrow. Im waiting for this storm to pass thru before i go out today. I saw one on one of my trail cams that has to go all of 260lbs on the hoof. His rack is a bit smaller than the one i have on my profile picture but its almost a perfectly symetrical 8pt. I saw him all last year but then he disappeared and i figured someone poached him or the coyotes got to him. I've got a little over a week to hunt him.
Hey Tsuga,
I live in a town outside Rochester and there is no hunting. My home is on a 10 acre lot and the surrounding area around me is bush/wooded with a small population of deer. Last night just before dark I saw a buck (nice 8pt) chasing a doe around the yard / woods, nose to the ground right behind her. I saw another 8 pointer (smaller and not as heavy of a rack) watching the action. Then saw a real small 6 pointer running around putting on a show as well but knew he had no shot with the other big boys around. Tried to get a picture but never got a chance but thought you'd enjoy.
Good luck hunting and be safe.
Got 11" of snow from that storm on top of the other 5. Went from good tracking snow to "Why did I think I should stand that far from the house, when I could just sit in the barn?" Gonna be a sweaty hike out to my stand in the morning.
Good luck & have fun!
WNYL: Can't even archery hunt in that area?? I'd be hanging a tree stand in the midst of all that.
I used to bow hunt behind the house years ago but the surrounding lands has been developed with houses and the town ended it in my area.
Hey, do you two guys live near Letchworth State Park?? I went there 20 some years ago and loved the place. Beautiful scenery!!
It's a ways west & south of me, WNY is an hour closer than I am. Nice day trip, but WOW, lot's of people. Thought I'd be safe mid week, when leaf peeper should have been wrapped up. Bus loads & bus loads!
It's so much nicer than the PA Grand Canyon. Lotsa neat waterfalls as I recall and the homestead of Mary Jameson.
We have an employee that told me today that he hunted in Letchworth State Park yesterday, which was opening day. He applied for a special hunting permit earlier this year and got it but had no luck. I asked him where the area is that allows hunting and it is in the Western part of the park but did get more specific.
Do they still allow Sunday hunting down in NY??
huh Damn reply disappeared.
Between 3 of us we saw 60+ deer Sat morning. Not sure how many were counted twice, but even then, a good number of deer for a few hrs in the woods. Yes, we can Sun hunt. Took a 7 pt (broke off one brow time) this morning. Was a bigger bodied, very symmetrical looking, THICK beamed, at least a 6 pt behind him. This one was closer.
lol Last time I waited for the nicer trailing buck, the 1st one winded me and stopped short. The trailing buck immediately turned and bounded back up over the drumlin, followed very soon after by the nosy one. Lesson learned, one on the ground beats watching two bounce away.

WOW!!!! 60 deer.....that's incredible. We dont see anywhere near that amount up here. To give you some perspective, there were 73 deer killed in the town that I hunt. The town is 46 square miles. Yep, when i was younger i waited for the "bigger one" to come by and ended up watching two flags waving goodbye to me. The only problem is, it took me a two or three times to learn that lesson. The buck i shot last year was the first deer I saw all year. I've hunted pretty hard this year and have only seen 10 deer total. When I went to my stand yesterday afternoon i had a nice doe about 20 yds from my stand. I had to wait 30-40 minutes for her to leave before i could get to my stand. I wasnt able to draw a doe tag so i had to let her walk away.
I just looked it up, there were only 23,500 deer killed in the entire state last year.
BTW......congrats on the 7pt. I hope you had some young bucks to help you drag it out. Do you butcher your own?? I always do.
Yes, 60 was an amazing amount of deer. (corn and soy bean fattened) haha To put in in perspective, seeing them, is not putting them on the table! I was the only one to see antlers and there were only 3 of them. Wish I knew how many we saw twice...or thrice for that matter. Usually we see between 0 and mid 20s. The neighbor really got the itch after seeing my buck, he's been seeing 8 - 10 morning and aft. lol He did see that nice 6+ pt, didn't get a shot either.
I can get at least one land owner permit for doe, some years I can get two....when I remember to put in for it before the cut off date.
Thanks T! No draggin' deer for me, still have the bucket on the tractor! Drive on up, roll it in, drive back home. Can't convince myself to swap it off for the blower until the snow is knee deep and it's below 0, so much more fun that way!
Yes Sir, cut up my own, Meat Science 101 w/ Dr Ziegler. It's skinned & quartered, hanging in the barn as I type. Will start working on it tomorrow.
