Penn is trying to raise money for a hockey endowment. The article is confusing. The fundraising goal is extremely modest. It sounds like administration is more interested in supporting the club program than starting D-1 men's or women's programs. Penn had D-1 men's hockey from 1966 to 1978. Six ivies currently have D-1 men's and women's hockey, only Penn and Columbia don't. Penn plays club hockey.

To me, this just demonstrates the complete lack of desire at Penn to play hockey. The university needs no endowment or fund raising to start a program, they just need the will to go D1.
It's a school that has the 7th largest endowment in the USA at 12.5 billion, LMAO they have the money. They wouldn't even need a new rink, it's already there and seats 2500 people (Princeton only seats 2100). Princeton rivalry built in, the animosity between those schools comes close to Yale / Harvard.
Just seems to me that for whatever reason they just don't want to do it.
I agree with you. You would think that the Ivies would want to compete with each other in most areas, including sports. College administrators are a funny lot. Perhaps they feel that they can't complete, at least against the consistently better Ivy teams (Harvard, Yale, Cornell). Maybe competing against Princeton isn't enough.

Yeah who knows, you're right... the admins are a strange lot. Thanks for the update.
Roam, here's an article from The Daily Pennsylvanian (Penn student paper) that does a better job of explaining the situation. It sounds like the rink is already in the process of being upgraded.

Thanks! Yes, that does a much better job explaining the situation
