I wonder if deployed US soldiers  miss their families more than the guy who gets 6+ million dollars to coach football does. Asking for a friend.

I’m in no position to judge anybody else’s level of missing their loved ones, but I also don’t really think money has any bearing on human feelings. Not on any reasonable, decent human being anyway.

So you know the answer to your question.  Why even post it??  That's a low classed cheap shot you took.  Besides, if you truly served and were deployed; you'd know you were comparing apples to oranges.

I understand. But when you accept the responsibility and pay that goes along with a head coach at a Power 5 school, there are sacrifices that need to be made. Franklin has enough money to build a small medical facility adjacent to his house that would ensure the safety of his daughter. I served and so did my son. During my son’s deployment his wife delivered twins. That’s sacrifice.

I like Franklin and appreciate that he is a family guy. But him trying to get empathy from the public about his family situation just rubbed me the wrong way.

@sky I’m trying to approach people these days with the thought that I don’t know what they are dealing with. Everybody is dealing with something we may not know about. We have healthcare workers in this country who are staying away from their families to try to keep their high risk family members from contracting this virus. We have military members, like you say, who are gone for months to years at a time. Everybody is dealing with something. I’m not judging someone else’s situation that I have no understanding of. Money doesn’t change those types of situations.

With all due respect to your son, he served.  My second child was born while I was deployed in Nam.  I served.  The brave men that died while serving were the ones that sacrificed.

I never served but wanted to enlist out of high school. I was lucky to find a great paying job right out of high school with no education. Even then I wanted to still leave that job to enlist.  As time went on my interest to enlist slowly went away. I deeply regret it to this day.  After a few years working that job I realized how the real world operates. So working full time I started taking classes part time at the local college and eventually increased my credits. I tried different trades, different jobs to see what I really liked.  I kept myself disciplined and motivated. I remember waking up at 6 am and I would remind myself what I needed to do and keep myself motivated to reach my goals in life.

Oh FFS, are we doing this now? This "someone has it worse than you" BS is ridiculous. The man misses his family, somehow you've managed to make that a bad thing. Bravo

@roaminglion: Well said.  It was a foolish post written by a foolish person and I was the bigger fool for even acknowledging him.

I kind of agree. I was never one for this "I served" you didn't "Bravo" stuff. I respect all walks of life  including our veterans.  Not sure what happened over the years. I guess the social media has influenced this type of inequality.

LOL.....Did you just seriously call an Officer in the United States Navy a GI Joe??  You might wanna stand down Suzy, you're way out of your league here.  Sky need not respond anymore, he pretty much told us all what we needed to know with his original post.

I will say this, to me it's never the actual people who served saying that stuff... it's the faux patriotism nonsense from people who haven't. I find vets or active military to be, for the most part, humble individuals who appreciate a gesture of respect but certainly don't feel better than anyone else. Or at least never convey it. It's the people who go around acting like we all "aren't American" if we don't genuflect in adoration every time we see a Vet, or hug a flag every chance we get.

Those people piss me off, mostly because I personally know some and they don't give a rip otherwise and do nothing to help. They just love to sound self-righteous about it, and basically USE the military for their own personal satisfaction.

THAT ALL SAID... If I had to choose, I GREATLY PREFER that to what vets had to deal with in the late 60's to mid 80's (being called baby killers, murderers, getting spit on). They were treated terribly.

Let the man respond before making assumptions or judgments.  I find it out of line, rude and questionable for someone to act like both of you have earlier,  laughing away and both of you don't know for sure. So, let it be.  We all have our rights to speak up. I'm not afraid to speak up.

@forum-titan Listen Bud, you have no idea what you're talking about.  There is just some things that Sky said in his posts that anyone that served knows is BS.  Just leave it at that and go in peace.  The acronym that NL used was a term used in Nam.  It was by no means disrespectful to anyone that served.....REMF's were just as valuable as the grunts on the front line.  Its no different than being called a NFG when ya first arrived in country.  So just stop.  The acronyms are no different than me call NL a swab or NL calling BT and I jarheads. Relax dude and enjoy your evening.

@roaminglion: Yeah, got got a lot a grief when we came home no doubt.  I dont expect anyone to genuflect when they see me but rather kneel and kiss my ring would suffice. I'm kidding Roam, I'm kidding.  I rarely talk about it unless I'm asked, and then I then to ramble on a bit too much.  So, my apologies if I've made you or anyone feel uncomfortable with anything I may have said in the past.  I truly wasnt my intention.

Absolutely nothing to apologize for at all. As I said I find most vets and servicemen great people who are very humble. Rarely, if ever, have I seen any of them think they were better than anyone else.

My meaning was the people who "act" like they care about vets as a way to make themselves feel better are the ones who really piss me off. They never miss a chance for a token bs gesture, it seems like they care more about being seen saying the care than really meaning it.

@tsuga

All I know is I almost got run over by a Doe Saturday morning at Indian Rock.  Sitting in my chair, hidden in a tree row in the field, a stupid Doe ran down out of the woods, across Indian Rock Road and through the tree row 5 feet to my right.  Heck, I jumped higher than the Doe did when we locked eyes!! The layout hasn't changed since you were last there, so you have seen the spot I was sitting in before.  ANd talk about fog!!!  It was well after 9:00 AM before I could see more than 50 yards across the field I was watching into the patch woods

OK first off, read my post which was reaffirming a fact, not making a judgement. FACT, he said he served, I just pointed out that he never said he deployed. He posted about him and his sin serving and his son deploying and his sacrifice because his kids were born when he wasn't home again.

You are calling me and Tsuga out about posting about an insensitive comment the guy made about Franklin being separated from his family and trying to compare it to the military? And you don't find Sky's post out of line? I find that fricken sad as well! Sad for Franklin and sad that Sky doesn't have the compassion to feel for the man. Anyone who has served "and deployed long term" from their loved ones, surely would have some compassion for what Franklin is going through or any other human being for that matter regardless of what their paycheck is. So no, I'm not a tough guy GI Joe, I am a human being, a husband and a father and grandfather who deeply understands all to well how it feels to be separated long term from his family while trying to do his job.

So you should just let it be.
