I am down town the QB situation.  Can Clifford get it done?  I think we have plenty of talent on both sides of the ball and enough play makers on offense to stay competitive in ALL of the games this season.  The question I have is whether or not Clifford can transition into the starting roll and stay calm, cool and collective and play smart. McSorley is going to be a tough cookie to replace and I don't think Clifford has quite the talent behind him that Trace had....right at this moment.

He has two games right of the bat - (although I still think Buffalo will be a little challenge this early) - to get his feet wet and find a beginning grove.  Pitt is Pitt, there will be a lot of hype as always, but I just don't see them or MD having enough power to pull off an upset.

Here is my opinion.  If they allow any of the first four teams to hang around late into the third or fourth quarter, this could end up being a long season.  Close scores at Halftime?  I am ok with that.  But they need to have these games won early in the second half.  Purdue will be a good first Big10 game at home and should tell us a lot about this Penn State team.  They get t0 5-0 with out much trouble, I honestly believe Clifford will feed off this and become dynamic!!!

GO STATE!!!!

Threw the ball less than 10 times in his college career. Ranked 10th in B10 QB's. Takes time and it may even require a few losses to learn and get experience . Just the way it is.  Be a rocky road in 2019

Y’all know I loved McSorley and man what a decision maker he was probably the best we’ve ever had considering the sanctions but I believe Clifford has more talent from what I’ve seen so far. If Clifford steps up and makes good decisions you better watch out baby. 11-2 baby big 10 champions. Don’t want to go out on a limb for the bowl game but if we play a PAC team I love  our chances 😁

Clifford has more talent around him than McSorley did. By that I'm talking about the whole team...

1. McSorley didn't have nearly the talented defense that PSU will have in 2019.
2. McSorley had a below average offensive line, Clifford will have an above average one.
3. Going into the 2016 season, only Barkley was really a stud. Godwin was though to have potential, and Gesicki was plagued by drops. Other than that there were a lot of question marks. I don't think anyone doubts the talent level of our skill positions this year, the only question is will they deliver.

You mean Trevor Lawrence? He's ranked #1, Clifford is ranked 186th. Bit of a difference there.

Trevor Lawrence also started as a true freshman, not a redshirt sophomore like Clifford. Also, McSorley was ranked #571 and wasn't recruited by any Division 1 coach outside of Franklin to play QB. I think he turned out okay.

I agree forum, its likely to be a rocky road for Sean Clifford in '19...as it is for many first time QB starters..those  fans pointing  out Tua and Trevor Lawrence, forgetaboutit   those guys are outliers, very few like that come along  , and while Tua likely would have been great from beginning, lets not forget, until the title game, he was mostly relegated to mop-up duty in Bama's romps..Clifford is entering his third yr in program; he would have forced his way onto field by now if he was anywhere near as good as TL or TUa..just as those two unseated the incumbent..

Also, PSU is not  a historically great QB program, most QB recruits have to earn their way, the TL's of the world nor Tua's don't usually enroll here..

Let me just point out....

You say Clifford would have forced his way onto the field by now if he was any good, but not once do you mention the best QB in PSU history and draft pick Trace McSorley was the upperclassmen he was playing behind? Let's also not forget it's pretty clear Clifford had the coaches trust for the upcoming season, not Stevens.

LMAO

CT, McSorley was to good for somebody to step in and take his position. We’ve also had all big 10 QB’s Collins, Clark, Robinson and McSorley so it’s not like we ain’t had some great QB’s. Joe just would’ve rather win with defense and it worked that’s why he has the all time wins records in big dawg college football.

Imagine someone saying Kyler Murray wouldn't be good because he couldn't beat out Baker Mayfield

Southern   to set the record straight, (I don think you said it) but I didn't say if Clifford was any good..I have to assume Sean Clifford is good, he's in line to be  a starting QB at a major program...What I did say, if he was anywhere near as good as TL, or Tua, he'd have forced his way on field by now..TL supplanted  a guy, Kelly Bryant who won an ACC title, and I believe, lost a CFP to Bama in a close game, then went 3-0...and Jalen Hurts, wasnt he something like 26-2 at Bama, while leading the Tide to a natl title game, yet these guys lost their jobs, because of the greatness of the freshman pushing them  as I said, theyre outliers, doesnt happen too often

Yes McSorely was good, but I think your good, and "my good" is  a bit different..He wasn't all America or CFP good, PSU did lose 4 games last yr....If Clifford was TL or Tua good, he'd have more experience now..

McSorley got drafted by an NFL team CT  the highest level of football where only the best go. The drops last year is why we lost 3 of the 4 games plus the drops killed momentum in the games. McSorley would had 500 more yard passing had we caught the football.some of our players just didn’t step up last year, it happens.

Well said. 4 B1G championships in 30 years nips it in the bud.

Instead of 30, lets drop the zero and go 3 years.  Penn State and Ohio State have owned the Big10! No need to look past the last 36 months, Penn State is JUST getting warmed up to take over Big 1o!!

Go State!!!

You're making the mistake of thinking winning games on great teams means you're a great QB. Peyton Manning never won a NC at Tennessee, yet Tee Martin did a year after he left. That doesn't mean Tee Martin was better than Manning.

Just like Kelly Bryant winning games at Clemson doesn't mean he's a great QB... I doubt he would have wound up at Missouri if he was soooo good. Jalen Hurts was a good QB, but any Bama fan will tell you the years he started he was a liability throwing the ball. He had a great running game and could run himself, but not a great passer. (He did look better last year)

Mitchell Trubisky sat for 3 years primarily behind Marquise Williams at North Carolina. Williams was in the CFL and is now currently unsigned and out of football while Trubisky was a 1st round pick and starts for the Bears. I mean, really... it means nothing that Clifford sat.
