Just read where Tariq Black, I hope I spelled this young man's name right has entered the Portal.  I believe he was a target of PSU during his recruiting days - at 6'3'' he could help improve the overall height of the receiving corps.  Any chance PSU takes a second look ??

Maybe, but without a waiver he'd sit next year anyway.

Wonder why he is transferring? If he ain’t good enough to play at Michigan and he ain’t gettin enough playing time he might not be good enough to play at penn st. I know there’s always exceptions but I’d think most of these guys transfer because they’re not good enough to play. Of course we did get the kicker that’s killing it this year

......of course, we aren't the over privileged Ohio State university. Seriously, Penn State never seems to be the beneficiary (I know we've had a few ) of available transfer portal talent. Does anyone think it's Franklin's personal bias or many players in the portal don't have interest in Penn State?

From what I have read it looks his plans are to finish classes, graduate and pursue a grad transfer.

Ahh, that would make more sense then. Obviously if he does that no waiver needed.

He's an interesting option because he was very good in his Freshman year before his injury. So he has the chops, but maybe just needs a change of scenery.

I’m a bit surprised to see Black seeking transfer, as he got playing time at Michigan and was highly regarded.  And wouldn’t he get even more time next season?  I’m not sure about People’s-Jones’ status re the draft, but I think Nico Collins is a Senior (?).  Maybe Black thinks Michigan is due to take a dip next season, with Patterson and some of the other starters that will be gone?

Or he could be tired of Harbaugh and the coaching staff. Could be a great many things, plenty of reasons a kid might want to transfer.

Referencing what Lake said, it would be nice to benefit from the portal just once and a while.

true, he is really good for us but we don't don't seem to get game changing talent to the level like Ohio State got Fields and Michigan got Patterson.

Patterson wasn't a game changing talent. IMO he was an overrated QB from Ole Miss that knew he lost the starting gig there and went to Michigan... where he did well against poor defenses and became a turnover machine against good ones.

Fields on the other hand, should have never been granted that BS waiver. That said, it is only year two of the portal so there's not much of a metric yet on who will benefit most.

well he changed the game for Michigan, prior to that their qb situation was pretty shaky. Anyway, you and I are tripping on marginals so what the heck.

Didn't Michigan have a 5th. year qb transfer from Iowa, Ruddick I think, that put them in a better place? And staying with the transfer portal thing, 3 of the Heisman finalists were TP's so I guess besides Ohio State and Michigan...LSU and Oklahoma have been big beneficiaries. The point is, Penn State has never had a TP football player that helped them as much as the schools I mentioned. The kicker for sure but only that a non returnable kickoff is nearly a sure thing.

We seem to be getting off topic, because the original post was "would be nice to benefit from the portal once in a while"

It's only year 2 of the portal, so I don't think we can say anyone always benefits or doesn't yet. The past two years we had McSorley & Stevens... so no QBs really thought this was a good situation to come into and try to compete. Stevens left pretty late in the year after spring, and by that time all the elite QBs shifting schools were done.

That kid Ruddock wasn't a portal transfer, he used the old system as a graduate transfer.
