Texas has had 2 seasons above 8 wins only twice in the past 12 years, and was 5-7 last year. Yet someone voted them #1 is the first coaches poll.
Thank god no one uses this stupid, idiotic poll to decide anything anymore.
I heard Clemson was in the top 5? They weren’t that good last year. They did win 10 games but the ACCstunk
Texas has been true to the saying; "the man wears a big hat and drives a new truck, but he ain't got a lot of cows". I wish people would just stop talking about TX. After the team puts up several consecutive seasons of 10 plus wins, then start buying the cows.
Blame it on no-excuse mail-in ballots and drop boxes, lmao.
The only poll that matters is the last one of the year! All these preseason and weekly polls are just a way to help TV stations make $$ and get ratings. I can't tell you how many times I have seen a top 10 team play a #20 - #25 team that was ranked outside the top 25 the week BEFORE the match up. They move them into the top 25 to make it look enticing! No need to start Penn State in the top 25, the TV rating will be good with a lot of viewers. In Fact, I bet THAT rating will be just as high as Ohio State vs ND. All about the fans!!
GO STATE!!

The polls have been around since before games were televised, so I really don't think that's true.

It won’t even be close to OSU vs ND….Sooner or later someone’s going to take you up on these bets that you keep proposing and you’re going to go broke.

Polls do generate discussion which in turn generates interest. That interest results in greater TV viewership. While television ratings may not be the purpose of polls, the impact of them are undeniable. For sure, their validity increases with each game.
poles only matter when your team is in top 10.
Aren’t all preseason polls stupid?
No, not really.
@forum-titan What good do preseason polls do? Why not play a couple weeks, see some actual results, then start polling? Preseason polls are just a, how'd ya finish last year, beauty contest.
@been-there-ii I agree BT and why do they have Ohio St ranked ahead of Georgia? We all watched what Georgia did to Michigan in the playoffs, I mean just a butt stomping. The big 10 has some work to do to get caught up. Ohio St and good enough at QB to compete with Georgia or Alabama

True, good point. Play the games but I'd bet my paycheck if they did away with them we would all be saying that not having polls is another reason why college football is failing or NIL took it's toll. I'm just saying every poll is different. Penn state is a top 20 team in one poll and not a top 20 in another.
@forum-titan Oh I agree, polls give everyone something to kibitz about. I'm just not sold that the preseason polls are worth the paper they're...not printed on these days. Play some games, then let them feed us their educated guesses on how good teams are. Before that, it's more or less a popularity contest.
I'm too lazy to look to see how often the preseason polls accurately predict any semblance of the final polls.
Ok BT, I bit. Not much semblance at all for the Coaches poll:
Rank Preseason Final
1 Alabama Georgia
2 Clemson Alabama
3 Oklahoma Michigan
4 Ohio St Cincinnati
5 Georgia Ohio St
6 Texas A & M Baylor
7 Notre Dame Oklahoma St
8 Iowa St Michigan St
9 North Carolina Notre Dame
10 Cincinnati Oklahoma
11 Florida Mississippi
12 Oregon Utah
13 LSU Pitt
14 USC Wake Forest
15 Wisconsin Kentucky
16 Miami Clemson
17 Indiana Houston
18 Iowa Louisiana (Lafayette)
19 Texas NC St
20 PSU Arkansas
21 Washington Oregon
22 Oklahoma St BYU
23 Louisiana (Lafayette) Iowa
24 Coastal Carolina Utah St
25 Mississippi Texas A & M
I doubt the coaches were making Millions per year back then and I am fairly certain tickets were about $5 for standing room and maybe $15 for a seat. So, the polls were probably more accurate back then and less today. Don't think for a second that these weekly polls are not tied into tv ratings and advertising/commercial money. Ever count the number of TV t/o commercials when two un-rank teams play in the middle of the afternoon vs a prime time match up? Or when two rank teams play in the middle afternoon?
I will never go broke....I am in pretty good shape....and I don't bet on my bets!!! I won $1,000 the last time Penn State beat Ohio State and I have never wagered another $1 on them since!
@mtnittanylion. I will never go broke? I’m reporting this to the IRS 😂
@mtnittanylion: well put. All you have to do is follow the money. It's all about advertising dollars.

All I said was I dont believe the only reason they exist is for TV. I'm sure TV ratings are def. affected by the polls, without a doubt.
However, I also dont think coaches or journalists care how much ESPN makes in advertising dollars either.
Unless they're looking to land a job with ESPIN!
Well certainly no one in the Big Ten would care about anything ESPN does anymore, as reports are the new Big Ten media deal doesn't include them at all. 1st tier games are on FOX, and 2nd tier games go to CBS/Paramount+ and NBC/Peacock.
Basically, ESPN/ABC will no longer carry ANY Big Ten game whatsoever.
