IMO he needs to beat a heavyweight this year or he could be let go. I could be wrong but the ND loss was a devastating loss to Penn St and James Franklin that shit loss put a target on James Franklin back and give Penn St football they can’t win a big game reputation. If we have another season like when we lost to Ohio State and Michigan then lost to ole Miss James  Franklin has got to go. I know some of y’all think beating SMU and Boise State is huge but most of the folks outside of Penn St don’t. I like James Franklin but if I was in charge he would’ve been held accountable for the ND loss, we had the better team and we choked. I was watching a big 10 podcast and James Franklin was one of the coaches that was discussed on being on the hot seat. Them guys didn’t think he is but I do and he should be. When is the last time we won a game when comparing apples to apples?

@been-there-ii I respect your opinion brother you know that but I’m seeing James Franklin this year as I did Coach Day last year. IMO Coach Day didn’t have to win the NC but he did need to beat Oregon to save his job just beating Tennessee wouldn’t have been good enough. Coach Day stepped his shit up and got the team prepared for the playoffs and he did great. James Franklin needs a big win and the only 2 big games we got is Oregon and Ohio St we gotta win one of those games or he’s in big trouble..go to a good bowl game and lose that I believe he gets fired. James Franklin is another Mark Richt probably not as good. Both coaches are great men but they just couldn’t take the teams to the next championship level. Georgia fired Mark and started winning NC’s. We will see my brother and I hope like hell I’m wrong lol I’m sick of losing these big games especially when we have the better team.

I know you have more insight than me BT I’m just looking at it from the outside just as a frustrating fan. I don’t know what Penn St is satisfied with. If the games are selling out and winning 10 games a year is good enough then he’s safe and that might be the case. After losing to Ole Miss and ND I just don’t believe James Franklin can beat the big dawgs and the QB play against good teams just ain’t good. I got the Dale Earnhardt Sr out look when Penn St might have the Mark Martin outlook. If you’re a NASCAR fan you’ll understand that 😂

BT & Southern - IMO you're both right.  It ain't gonna happen, but it probably should if he sheets the bed again this year.  That BS loss to ND should have been his ticket to ride.

@southern-psu-fan

lol My insight doesn't mean diddley squat.

Could Franklin have done better? Sure! But, how in the world do you fire a coach, that you just gave performance bonus money to, then tell him the reason he's getting shown the door, is because he sucks? How many college playoff coaches have gotten fired? How many NFL playoff coaches got fired? Not that I follow that kind of thing closely, but I can't think of any off the top of my head.

Are we looking to go down the "win at all cost" road? Do you tell potential new coaches during the interview; Hey, getting to the playoffs is nice. But if you don't win the National Championship, you're toast!

I could be wrong, but I don't see it happening. Perspective, Paterno had 4 losing seasons in the early 2000s, kept his job.

@been-there-ii  I get it and understand exactly what you’re saying brother but in year 11 what we see is what we get. As for the goat, he won more than his share of big games and won 2 NC’s and had 5 undefeated seasons so he probably earned them few bad years but I still see what you’re saying. I have a lot of confidence winning the games we should win but not much confidence when we’re playing teams that have the same talent level. 10-2 again which ain’t bad if you’re satisfied with it. With Paterno it always seemed we had a chance to play for the NC every 3 or 4 years I just miss that 😂

I was just thinking. Maybe it's not Jimmy's fault after all.  When the BOT fired JoePa, did the football gods invoke a curse similar to the Curse of the Bambino that the Boston Red Socks incurred after sending Babe Ruth to the Yankees?  I believe that resulted in an 86 yr championship drought for the BoSocks!  If I'm right, we may not see a Natty in our lifetime!  Either we're suffering under the Curse of JoePa or I've been unduly influenced by our friend's posts about hexes, potions and the like.  Anyway, College Football hasn't been the same since good old Joe was fired and passed away!

Not happening, and no one give a sh@#t about a loss to Ole Miss with half our defense opting out. Bowls don't matter anymore.

@roaminglion it’s not just the loss to Ole Miss, it’s losses to Ohio State,Michigan, Oregon and ND the teams that have the same talent level as Penn State does. All teams are playing by the same rules so players sitting out is part of it and it needs to be planned for. If you don’t care about losing to ole Miss that’s fine but I don’t believe most fans are happy about it. Apparently Penn St is okay with it so really that’s all that matters. Wins are wins and losses are losses.

Franklin will only be on the hot seat if he doesn't get to the playoff. Losing in the semifinal again isn't going to get him fired.

As for Ole Miss, no one I know cares. Why would you? It's a meaningless game with half the team out. I've heard you talk about how Auburn didn't care about the bowl game, and that's why UCF beat them back then.

Now people care? Which is it? Why didn't Auburn care, but we did?

@southern-psu-fan If I'm figuring it correctly, it took Paterno 16 yrs to win his 1st Natty. Would you had fired him for non-performance after yr 11? Or fire him his 1st yr, 'cause he only won 5 games?

@been-there-ii  Paterno’s first 16 years were as about as good as you can do we just had a rigged system on how you win the NC the goat had 3 or 4 undefeated teams. My problem with James Franklin ain’t that he’s not won a NC, my problem is he can’t win get enough wins against the heavyweights. The losses against teams playing apples to apples are pilling up and it’s actually getting worse the last few years.

Man Ole Miss and Oregon racked up in the transfer portal and Ole Miss top player is Harrison Wallace. The transfer portal has always been pretty good to us but this year we took it on the chin. Miami did pretty good too. How does Ole Miss have room for 22 portal players?

Paterno's biggest wins in his first 16 seasons were NC State, Maryland, Kansas and Missouri. He didn't win NC's in 1968, 1969, or 1973 because they practically played no one:

  • In 1968 they didn't play a ranked team until the bowl game, and beat Kansas 15-14. Is Kansas one of those "heavyweights" your talking about?
  • In 1968, they played one ranked team: #17 West Virginia before playing big bad Missouri and barely winning 10-3. Another heavyweight?
  • In 1973, again only played one ranked team all year: #20 Pittsburgh. Then barely beat #13 LSU 16-9 in the bowl game.

Sorry, but where are the heavyweights Paterno beat in his first 16 seasons? Kansas? Missouri? NC State???

Just be honest, don't invent a story about rigged systems.  Our schedules back then weren't exactly packed with awesome "heavyweights" by any standard. It's okay to admit it, we only played who was on our schedule.

@roaminglion  Kansas finished 7th and that’s after we beat ‘em. They were ranked 6th when we beat ‘em. Y’all barking up the wrong tree if you want to compare James Franklin records against the goat Joe Paterno. It’s really not even fair to James Franklin. Missouri was also ranked 6th when we beat them. I believe we also kicked Texas ass one of those years. It was right before my time. I come to Penn St in 1975

So let me get this straight, beating Kansas because they are ranked in the top 10 is beating a "heavyweight"? Kansas? But SMU and Boise State don't count as heavyweights even though they were in the top 10 also? I see, thanks for clarifying your bull junk double standards.

Yeah, Kansas and Missouri are such a blue bloods.

@roaminglion Kansa won the big 8 in 68 so they were pretty good I never said they were a heavyweight. If you believe SMU and Boise are heavyweights, have at it.

You: "Paterno’s first 16 years were as about as good as you can do"

Also you: "my problem is he (Franklin) can’t win get enough wins against the heavyweights"

So... who were the "heavyweights" Paterno beat in those 16 years that made his seasons "as good as you can do"? Or.... Did he also lose to the Oklahoma's, Alabama's, and other blue bloods when he played them? In Paterno's first 10 years he was 3-8 vs top ten teams. His wins: NC State, Kansas, and Missouri
