PSU PASSING vs. ND FILM STUDY

See Link. Film speaks for itself...but Codutti did highlight some issues that haven't been message board talking points yet, and I was introduced to the phrase "And 1 Mixtape route," so that was interesting. A lot of the visuals here bring to focus many of the topics Tengwall touched upon in his "State of the WRs" podcast yesterday, which was a great watch.

Evidently a receiver coach needs to teach the art of the pick.... or he looks for a job.  Primarily it seems we do not execute picks.  Surely if they are not going to call a hold they will not call a good pick?  And after they call one they will be less likely to call another...good investment.

Then we find out RB's need to execute their fakes to keep people occupied.

Then we have the QB who has some responsibility for helping his offensive line by being where he is supposed to be.

Team sport and you need to do your job even when you are not getting the ball.

Unless at the pregame meeting  the crew told James they would watch for the picks but not holds on pass plays...

You can give DA Godwin and hamler in the ND game and we get the same result except ya’ll will be saying Godwin and Hamler have seen their better days. It’s always the WR’s fault.

This dude is really attentive to detail (not all coaches are) and his film breakdown has been consistent all year; WR separation and how it should be missed assignments and how it should be, and DA mechanics and what they should be. IMO, QB mechanics are the hardest to fix because they have been ingrained by this age for 10-12 years, that is no easy fix because of the mental/psychological cog that has to be seamless during times of stress, practice ain't game time.

Is there someone on the coaching staff that breaks film down like this and then uses it?

Nah, you just strawman this BS to make it sound like I don think Allar needs improvement.

You claim the WRs are great and would start almost anywhere else. You've said that. I have never said Allar is a finished product or claimed he's great.

I have stated he's good, and I think he will continue to get better. I am also not freaking blind to the fact our WRs can't get seperation or open consistently. They are average at best, no one scares anyone.

The difference between Ohio State and Penn State was Ebuka and Smith. You put those two on our team, we are in the final. Will Howard isn't great either, but man his guys get open. Somehow Allar can find Warren, and the other TEs... yet can't find the WRs. I wonder why.

@roaminglion maybe he struggles to throw down field. I’ve never said the WR’s are great I just don’t blame them for everything like you do.

I'm done with this strawman chit.

"I've never said the WRs are great" - You have literally stated they woukd start on 99% of other teams.

"I just don't blame everything on the WRs like you do" - I have litterally stated multiple times that Allar needs improvement and he hasn't played well. I don’t blame everything on the WRs, I just don't act like they are blameless and capable of starting for just about every other team like you have stated.

The use of picks is EXACTLY what I was talking about all season...That is part of an offensive scheme and he had an all world TE which is the most effective position on the offensive side of the ball to execute "rub routes" or pick plays...I will go on record as saying RIGHT NOW Allar is a better QB than Howard is...I also 100% agree that if you give us OSU's wideouts and they take ours we beat them like a drum...The WR coach has to go and I can't understand how he has been there as long as he has...We have a lot of kids coming back that I thought were gone...This team should be better than they were this year just by experience alone...The OLine has gone from a weakness to a strength and I believe our defense will be at worst as good as it was this year and may have a shot to be better...Poaching either Larry Johnson or Venable from Ohio State would be terrific to replace Allen as the DC...I have high expectations of this team for next year...I would love to see em bring in a tall fast WR from the portal...It's all about the money in this new college football environment...This team was in the semi finals so top talent should want the opportunity to play for a contending team...I actually think the future is bright for the program...

The WR coach has to go and I can't understand how he has been there as long as he has...We have a lot of kids coming back that I thought were gone...

I don't understand why he was brought in to begin with. Virginia isn't the top of the list when I think of "WR factory", in fact they kind of stink in that department. WTF had this guy ever done to warrant his hire in the first place?

Recruiting, which hasn't worked out.

I've heard that too, but it also baffles me... when he was at Virginia, they weren't getting huge WR recruits. Just a confusing hire

This review reminds me of 'For the Want of a Nail'.  Details matter.  Running back takes off a play, receiver doesn't get open, QB drifts left, throws over the middle...INT.  Actually seems like 3 or 4 nails....

"For the want of a nail the shoe was lost;
For the want of a shoe the horse was lost;
For the want of a horse the battle was lost;
For the failure of battle the kingdom was lost;—
And all for the want of a horseshoe nail."

@psu61 Yep, that was why he was hired. Hell, the RB coach, stuck into the WR coaches position was better. Can't recall is name, but I think he got the shaft.

One of the two was the semifinal between the No. 6 seed Penn StateNittany Lions (13-3) and the No. 7 Notre Dame Fighting Irish (14-1). The Fighting Irish won 27-24 with a last-second field goal.

The result left coach James Franklin with a 1-15 record against teams ranked in the top five and a 4-20 mark against teams in the top 10. As a result, ESPN's Paul Finebaum expressed on "The Paul Finebaum Show" that he believes Franklin is a jinxed coach who has no chance of winning a national championship.

IMO we had a chance this year. This loss is on the players in the playoffs not James Franklin. We can blame the WR’s and DA but we can also blame the defense because when it was nitty gritty time ND defense made a play and ours didn’t and we pride ourselves on defense. Ain’t going that route again just saying lol…the loss to ND isn’t on James Franklin is all I got to say. I’m thinking a little clearer today 😂 and fudge ND!

@southern-psu-fan

I don't know, Southern.  I'm still thinking we should have kept it on the ground that last possession.  Maybe one of our RB's would have broke one or they at least could have gained some nice yardage and even got us in FG range (even a very long one).  At worst we could have taken time off the clock and moved it to OT.  Any possible outcome would have been better than the Int we ended up with.  I think Jimmy picked the wrong situation to be aggressive.  Just my hind sight playing with me, lol.
