See Link. The most encouraging segment of the video IMO was after the false start that made 4th down and 1 4th down and 6, Allar moved off his initial read and hit the dig to Cephas for 15ish yards to move the chains. Codutti said something along the lines that when Allar is pressed and HAS no choice but to make a dynamic play, he does it. I just can't understand why he doesn't display that same mindset on standard downs.

I’ve been sort of wondering the same thing. Why does he look like Aaron Rodgers for one or two plays of a long drive and Trent Dilfer for the rest?

Because he's a freshman, they have growing pains. Most likely a lot of schemes and defensive alignments he's only seen on tape, not a ton of experience yet.
Other freshman QBs have the same issues, but usually we only see the highlights so it looks like their mistake free.
@roaminglion how is he still a freshman when he was our backup QB last year? Seems to me that he has the ability to make plays but the coaching staff is holding him back or telling him not to do certain things.
All I know is in the next couple weeks we’re probably going to need him to do more than he’s been doing.

My bad, I thought he was the whole "4 games" freshman redshirt thing but yeah he played in more garbage time games. What I meant was meaningful experience, and he just didn't see the complex defensive schemes last year... and he's still young. Some it comes quick, some it takes a bit of time. I think the bye week and UMass come at a perfect time for him to be ready for OSU.
He’s not reading through his progressions. He’s so quick to dump it down which is why Singleton was the leading receiver against NW, dinks and dunks work against Illinois and NW but the deep threat needs to be there or teams like OSU and UM are just going to load the box and play man coverage because they’re definitely not worried about Clifford or Cephas at this point. KLS is a quality receiver but better as a 2, we’re missing what we’ve had in the past with Hamler and Dotson but even still Drew isn’t letting plays develop before he checks down.
I believe he just had a bad game, it happens. It was his 4th start and it was a road game. I believe these next couple of games we’ll see this kid improve a lot.
I think you're right, Southern. He'll improve game by game. Just hope he doesn't start forcing throws to get the "splash" plays everybody (including yours truly) is calling for. He needs to keep on protecting the ball and take what he defense gives him.
@kularrow Allar is going through his reads, he isn't checking down for no reason. Also, Singleton was not the leading receiver against Northwestern... Lambert-Smith was.
On 34 passes, WR or TEs were targeted 27 times. RBs only 7 times. That's not indicative of a QB constantly checking down.
Has Allar even thrown a pass that traveled over 20 yards? In the 3 games I’ve attended I don’t recall it happening.
@psujoe Second pass of the season, he threw a 50 yard rope to Lambert-Smith that ended up a 72 yard TD. That's definitely the one that comes to mind first. He had another long pass to LS in that game as well.
That said, looking back on some of the games it really does seem like we're keeping that part of the offense hidden or something. There's been a lot of called bubble screens, TE screens, and short to medium pass routes... but not really many called deep shots. I really wonder if they are calling those plays to get him more experience and comfort with the medium passing game before adding the deep shots back into the fold. Both of those deep passes in the WVU game were on scrambles, so not exactly called first option plays.
@roaminglion We’re 5-0 ranked 6th I’m sure the coaches have their reasons. Remember last year we were feeling a little shaky about the offense and then boom, we started throwing the ball all over the field and then we really lit it up in the Rose Bowl.

As I've said... I feel like the bye week came at a perfect time. The kid can look at tape, review the first 5 games, prepare for a tune-up game against UMass before heading to the horseshoe. Can't ask for a better scenario
