Your logic is so flawed sometimes. A QB is bad because his team is bad... Man, Patrick Mahomes must have gotten so much better since his teams stunk at Texas Tech. You keep hitching yourself to that mantra "if the team sucks the QB isn't a winner" crap. Maybe, you know... Oregon has better players now? And a better coach? Or... hmmm.... Bo Nix isnt' a freaking freshman anymore?@roaminglion so what you’re saying is Bo Nix transferred from a bad Auburn team because he wasn’t good enough to playa and goes to Oregon and he’s a threat to win the heisman lol That’s how bad the PAC defenses are.
@roaminglion he wasn’t a freshman when we played him he was a junior if I remember correctly. He got beat out by another QB and transferred.
Ok... so was Will Levis bad because he couldnt beat out Clifford on a 4-5 team before he transferred?@roaminglion he wasn’t a freshman when we played him he was a junior if I remember correctly. He got beat out by another QB and transferred.
Seems he did pretty well in the SEC.
@southern-psu-fan How about the other coordinators that were fired? Same issues pretty much since he got here
@roaminglion I never said he was bad, all I said was he got beat out and lost his job and he transferred. I actually thought he was pretty dang good. Since Auburn wasn’t up to par doesn’t mean the QB’s are bad. If you remember Roam, I’m the one that said we may have let the wrong QB transfer. Water under the bridge.
@cohappy James Franklin fired Donovan and it paid off getting Moorhead we won a big 10 championship. He promotes Ricky Rayne and we go 11-2 winning the Cotton Bowl. Rayne leaves and we hire Rocco and that dude was let go because James Franklin thought Mike Yurcich was an upgrade and he was right because we won 11 games last year and we won the Rose Bowl. Clifford was MVP and he plays offense so the offense had to have a good game. Y’all know we would finish 10-2 this year but apparently that’s not good enough for James Franklin so he’s making a change again to try and get the right OC to beat Ohio St and Michigan. For goodness sakes, he’s doing exactly what he should do. IMO there’s maybe 5 or 6 coaches that’s done better than James Franklin so who do you want to get if you want him out? BTW Georgia, Alabama, Ohio St have better players than Penn St them teams are loaded with 5* players all over the field. Nobody has yet to say who you want as coach but y’all want him out. Homer did say Ferentz was better but he’s not coming to Penn St so who do you want?
Southern, I have to disagree a little bit with you here.
Franklin was a player, then an assistant and then Head Coach. It is HIS job to know when somebody beneath him is not getting it done and take over immediately.....and I mean on game day. After 2 quarters at Ohio State, JF should have taken over. After two quarters with Michigan, he should have learned from the Ohio State MY was once again making poor decisions and JF should have jumped in.
I am not even going to say MY is a bad OC. He just happened to be spiraling out of control this season. He had a new QB and just couldn't figure out how to help him progress and still keep the Offense trucking along. Like Clifford or not, Clifford made MY's life easy because he was experienced and could handle the pressure, Allar isn't their yet. JF should have taken control after the Ohio State loss and designed an offense that would keep Allar calm and yet put him in a position to move the ball better than he did vs Ohio State. JF knew ( or at least he should have ) what worked and what didn't against Ohio State and not allow the same thing to happen against Michigan....and he didn't. That is solely on his shoulders and he failed.
We can say what we all want to about Bama and Saban, but look at some of the close games he had this season and how well they finished them....that was ALL SABAN! And hasn't fired ONE coach this season. Instead, he has quietly taken his lump against Texas, kept the moral up and now is in a position to still win it all this season. Rees is a good OC for Bama, but don't think for a second SABAN isn't mentoring him and helping him develop as an OC and but still taking control when needed. Even PRIME wishes he get some of Sabans knowledge!! LOL
JF needs to be a bigger part of the decisions and not relying on others to pick up his pieces! MY failed because JF didn't develop him....and maybe JF just doesn't have that gear!!
Alabama secured the top spot in the class of 2023 rankings after the December signing period. The Crimson Tide landed nine 5-star players and three of the top 10 players in the class.
It’s not even fair to compare the few 5* players James Franklin has to the empire of 5* players at Alabama. That’s just the class of 2023 and Alabama does this every year. Penn St ain’t on the same recruiting level as Alabama, Georgia or Ohio St. apples to apples and James Franklin stands his ground. Since 2016 we’ve lost a Rose Bowl, won a Rose, Cotton and fiesta Bowls and hopefully we’re headed to the peach bowl this year. Just a few teams better brother and that’s it.
Winning 11 games doesnt mean the OC was good. Iowa has won 8 games and will most likely win 10 in the regular season. That doesnt mean their offense is good.@cohappy James Franklin fired Donovan and it paid off getting Moorhead we won a big 10 championship. I will give this much. JF stands his ground apples to apples and is very stable and consistent as a coach:
JF record at Penn State:
- 3-17 against top 10 ranked teams
- 4-16 record against Ohio State and Michigan
- 3-7 against Michigan
- 1-9 against Ohio State
- 12-25 against teams ranked in the top 25
But please don't tell me that if Nick Saban was the Penn State coach with the exact same players and assistant coaches during the same time periods, he would have the same exact results!
But I will give you this. JF has done something that NO other Penn State coach ever has done before....he lost to Temple by 17 points. In fact, he broke the streak of wins against Temple as well....73 years!
He also did something JVP never did. He lost to Maryland! And he also did something that NO other Penn State coach did. He lost to Maryland by 16 points!
Just having fun some fun with you! I hope JF finds a good OC who can get us back on track on offense and starts to even out his record as stated in this post!
GO STATE!!
@roaminglion Iowa’s not winning 11 games and winning the Rose, Fiesta and Cotton Bowl either. All we can do is beat the teams we play and imo there’s just a few teams better than we are because they recruit better and unfortunately 2 of the few teams are in our division and our conference. We’re not that far off hopefully the the OC he brings in gets us the edge we need to be top 5. One thing all y’all can forget about is getting a new head coach that recruits better than James Franklin and you can also forget about recruiting better than Ohio St, Georgia, Alabama, USC, LSU and Texas if they’ve got the right coach. We can turn into Nebraska real quick firing a coach that’s winning 11 games that’s something that can happen. We’re only losing to top 5 teams it’s not like we’re losing to Wisconsin, Utah or iowa. I want to beat Michigan and Ohio St just as bad as everyone else does but I don’t want to destroy the football team if we don’t.
@mtnittanylion them stats are kind of deceiving because the teams in the top 10 that we’re losing to are the same teams in the top 25 lol. Do this broth. Show me how many teams in the last 2 years we’ve lost to outside the top 5 and show ole southern how many times we’ve lost being favorites because if we lost being underdogs means we’re we’re supposed to lose?
Harbaugh excepts the 3 game suspension. Slap on the wrist so it must not be that big a deal. Big 10 is so scary lol
OK, lets back up two years to 2021
Ranked as high #4 and finished outside of the Top 45
Lost 5 straight games to ranked teams.....favored in two of them
DID beat two ranked times..... that actually finished outside the 25
Ranked #7 in the country and lost to an unranked Illinois ( 2-5 ) at HOME and we were favored by 14.5 points.
JF went from #4 in the country and finished behind UAB and Coastal Carolina in the final rankings.
Was in a tied game in the 3rd quarter with Ohio State and lost
Was ahead of Iowa 20-13 in the 4th quarter and lost
Was ahead of Illinois 10-3 in the 4th quarter and lost
Was ahead of Michigan late in the 4th quarter and lost
Was ahead of Sparty in the 3rd quarter and lost
Was ahead of Arkansas at Halftime and lost
Ya think he could have maybe closed one or two of these games?
Lets take a look at 2022 which WAS a good year him
Ahead of Ohio State in the 4th quarter, at HOME, and still managed to give up 28 points in the 4th quarter and lost by 13.
And 2023
Do you want to discuss some of his game day decisions vs both, Ohio State and Michigan?
Southern, this is the inconsistency we have with JF. I get some of the stuff you say, but a good coach is not going to fall apart like this. I realize these are young kids playing football, they probably made some bad decisions that cost them some opportunities, but JF just can't complete a game against good teams....and 2021 was a mess against some teams that don't even make YOUR top 5!
GO STATE, POUND RUTGERS!!!
@mtnittanylion ……. Mt.Nittany with a shout-out for the UAB Blazers …….. very nice
I think this is the first year that UAB will not go to a bowl game since their return in 2017. But this is also their first year in the AAC and their first year with Trent Dilfer as the coach.
@tae-buetel didn’t know Trent Dilfer was their coach. Lot of talent in the great state of Alabama. Alabama and auburn can’t get ‘em all.
I heard Chip Kelly might get the ax. Would he be a guy that James Franklin might look at?
let's just look ahead to the next 3 games and then hope JF brings the right guy on as the OC. Honestly, I am just disappointed because I thought Penn State had a great opportunity to at least split Mich/Ohio State. And then after you watch the games, Penn State had two winnable games and just didn't get it done.
Not sure how this will all work, but I hope they play a good team in their bowl game and we have the next/new OC calling the plays. And I want a name other than Tulane on the other side of the ball.
Go State!
@mtnittanylion I’ve read on espn that it could be Ole Miss and they can score so we’ll see. We can only beat who we play.
The only way we're playing Ole Miss is if Missouri loses. Missouri is 3rd in the SEC with a #9 ranking. Ole Miss is 4th at #13. Missouri is practically guaranteed a NY6 spot if they win out.@mtnittanylion I’ve read on espn that it could be Ole Miss and they can score so we’ll see. We can only beat who we play.
Right now, my guess is we would play Tulane...
If it goes chalk:
Sugar (Semifinal): Georgia vs. Washington
Rose (Semifinal): Michigan vs. Florida State
Peach: Alabama vs. Oregon
Orange: Louisville vs. Ohio State
Fiesta: Oregon vs. Texas
Cotton: Penn State vs. Tulane

If we play Tulane all we can do is put a beat down on ‘em something USC couldn’t do when they had the chance.
