Houston Texans fire coach/GM Bill O'Brien after 0-4 start
Atlanta would be a great place for him. Matt Ryan might step his game up with a coach like bob. Come on to Atlanta bob. Bob will be a great fit in Atlanta baby
Wondered when that ax was gonna fall.
Some of his trades were down right bizarre...Brock Osweiller, Clowney but most jaw dropping DeAndre Hopkins. He has proven he can recruit so maybe he is a better fit as a college coach.
@southern-psu-fan I don't think going from a 0-4 coach. to a 0-4 coach is what the owner has in mind southern, nor will fit well with the fanbase
@culture-thrives BOB is a good coach I just don’t thing he’s got his kind of QB. I’ve never been a big fan of Matt Ryan but I think bob could step up his game the way Shanahan did. I’ll take bob any day what have we got to lose, it can only get better lol
@southern-psu-fan Im still mad at the Falcons for blowing that game to the Cowboys; At 1-2-1, the Eagles would have a game and half lead for first over our main competition, lol...
He might do better in Atlanta - it would be interesting to see the results. As a very loose comparison, Saban was 15 and 17 in the NFL while BOB was 54 and 52. In his first 3 years at Michigan State, Saban was 19, 16 and 1. BOB was 15 and 9 at PSU. There are too many variables involved to get an accurate assessment.
@tae-buetel. Man tae, I don’t put many coaches in the same class as Saban that dude can flat out coach, recruit, bring in tons of money 💰 and get respect from the players. If there’s such thing as having that it thing Saban has it lol. He’s definitely up there with all the top dawgs. Bob will find his way he’s to good not too I just hope it’s in Atlanta lol
OBrien left college because he hated recruiting. Technically he is far superior to Franklin but Franklin not only loves recruiting, he is good at it.
OBrien never put together the right combination of players in Houston. He also never had a guy like Tom Brady as QB.
I was disappointed he left PSU but in the end the Nittany Lions are in a better situation with James Franklin as head coach.
O'Brien took the PSU job as a fill in , means to an end, fill in the blanks. Good coach, but I think his weakness is relating to players, communication among players and assistant coaches.
@sky BOB only took the Penn State job as a stepping stone to his Pro head coaching future. He never had any intention on staying at Penn State or as a college head coach. He stated very early on while at Penn State that head coach in the NFL in his mind was the pinnacle of the profession.
@exesuwarrior95 I think BOB relates to players just fine he’s just like most coaches out there, he has to have his kind of QB. IMO Matt Ryan is a perfect QB for what BOB wants running his offense.
If guys like JJ watt would play the game instead of bucking the head coach the Texans probably wouldn’t be 0-4. When these players listened to BOB they were making the playoffs.

Maybe if he didn't trade away or get rid of talented players that were listening to him, they wouldn't be 0-4. But he because GM and made some puzzling moves.
@roaminglion we’ll just have to wait and see who rebounds first, my money is on bob and I’m hoping it’s in Atlanta
I really wanted BOB to succeed as in my view he was the savior of PSU football. How he managed to persuade 2 5 star recruits to come to Penn State during the program's darkest time is really amazing.....and then to keep the heart of the team together when the NCAA and Big 10 allowed other schools to hunt and scoop some of our best players is even more amazing. As the Texans head coach he did a pretty decent job winning 4 division titles. But the first time I had scratched my head was when he traded for Brock Osweiler, a one season wonder back up for a $72myn 4 year contract, $37 myn guaranteed. But then he becomes the GM and trades Hopkins for (what turns out to be ) a mediocre running back, is just plain jaw dropping. If he stays in the NFL, I'm wondering if he will be not better than a position coach, never again to be a HC. Then again, the NFL is a carousel of recycled coaches to he won't be our for long. I just hope he finds the right fit.
@lakerie. Maybe he needs to be just a head coach and not GM. I agree with you lake he saved Penn States football team from tanking and he’s done a good job winning division titles at Houston with not much QB play. Atlanta baby will be a great stop for him I’ll take my chances with BOB any day. 3 more long weeks my friend and we going to get some real football 🏈 Lake I’m tired of the fake news and fake football lol
I think it just became too much for him to be both GM and head coach. In some respects, it works against you as head coach because you can't really be "on the players side" as GM. You have to make tough decisions on contracts, who to cut, who to hire, etc. Hard to tow that line as a leader people want to follow if you're also responsible for cutting a well liked player or not paying someone the money they want.
When a GM is separate from a Head Coach, the HC can kinda say things like "I fought for you" or even "we'll miss you" when a guy gets shown the door. When the HC is also the guy who cut him in the first place, can't really do that and it can lead to issues IMO.
Penn State University saved PSU football. OBrien was there for a short ride.
@sky of course Penn State deserves credit for saving Penn State football because they hired BOB but trust me if bob had jumped ship after his first year recruiting would’ve went down the drain unless they already knew they wanted James Franklin. Maybe somebody here knows if they were already eyeing James Franklin if bob had left?
With all due respect Southern, I'm thinking you're giving Joyner and the BOT too much credit for actually having a plan, lol.
