Another school boarding up their doors for good. Another one rumored to follow the same suit. 2006, 45 man roster....2015, 35 man roster, 2019, 17 man roster. Not sure why a private school would close in such a great populated area. I have my opinions on the coal region decline.
Why?
I had to look it up, i thought it was the Harrisburg, Pa football powerhouse but its the school in Montgomery County near Philly. The article sites Covid as the reason as the school is running at 40% capacity. Such a shame.

It is a shame. Covid 19 isn't the only reason. They don't want to tell you other reasons.
@lakerie. I remember that high school name Bishop McDevitt lot of great football players come out of there. Isn’t that where Lesean McCoy went to school? Maybe it was a good RB we had that come from there I can’t remember lol

Lots of D1 players come out of Pennsylvania. Coal region produced plenty of talent at one time but not anymore. Coal region football is past its prime. It's getting worse Southern.
You are correct Bishop McDevitt in Harrisburg has produced a lot of great high school football players. LeSean McCoy, Ricky Waters, Noah Spence, etc. Bishop McDevitt in Wyncote, PA closed in 2020, as did several other schools within the Philadelphia Archdiocese. It’s declining enrollment over the years was known. It had a lot of competition. There are a plethora of other private high schools in the Philadelphia area that are thriving, Archbishop Wood, LaSalle, St Joe’s Prep, Chestnut Hill Academy, Penn Charter, Germantown Academy, etc.

I can tell you right now the coal region will soon have 0 private catholic schools. It's coming. Simply put, families are moving out, can't afford it anymore. Tuition is ridiculous. Concussions are another problem. Diocese have so many lawsuits. More than we know. People are giving up on the catholic church.
@forum-titan I grew up in a rural area in Western Pa and there were very few Catholic high schools and enrollment was low, simply because the residents could not afford to pay the tuition. I can tell you that the Philly suburb private high schools I listed above can be very expense, some have tuition fees close to college tuition. You need to have some serious cash to be able to afford your local school taxes AND pay the tuition for those schools. All have great reputations, but they are pricey.

Yes, I know. Most of my family attended private institutions back in the days. I'm totally disgusted to see what's going on where I was born and raised. I packed my bags and moved farther south for greener pastures and loved driving up to the coal region on a Friday to see a great game. However, the past few years have been rough. That tradition is practically gone. It breaks my heart. We are probably making one more move in the near future before our retirements. A little farther south again.
I graduated from Erie Cathedral Prep many years ago when the parishes contributed the majority of the tuition making it affordable. Of course that was when churches were full and the sins weren’t reported. How times have changed. I remain a dedicated Catholic with hopes that a repentant church can be a better church not striving to be the biggest, most powerful church.
@lakerie I went to Central Catholic which changed its name to Bishop O'Reilly. I went there 7-10th grade. I didn't get expelled but was asked not to come back at the end of my sophomore year. Guess I wasn't a good Catholic. No soup for me huh Southern!!! LOL!! That school opened in 1957 and closed in 2007. The church contributed less and less and the tuition got way out of hand.
My JR and SR year I went to West Side Vo Tech. Much better fit for me at the time!!
I know many people who are Christians but say they are not religious. They believe in Christ, just none of the religions built around him. I found it interesting.
Thanks for the kind remarks Southern and right back atcha. NavyLion...of you want your Catholic soup, just say 3 Hail Mary's and 1 Our Father. That should do it.
@roaminglion. I love JESUS as much as anybody else and I love my church but I’m not a religious person either. I made a comment just a few weeks ago that I’m ashamed that I made but it just come out wrong and I didn’t mean it the way it come out because it made me look like I was judging transgender. Who I was talking about is the people that try and discredit GOD and that’s just not transgender people heck I believe most transgender people are probably Christian people. I don’t believe in judging people and you better stay out of that chair because JEHOVAH is the only judge and he’s very clear that we better not judge anybody and we better love your neighbor as you do yourself that whole post just come out wrong and Jehovah got all over my butt to I promise you that. Jehovah knows how to spank us without using a belt and brother I got spanked. You gotta watch how you say stuff and if you mess up you better confess up to your mistakes. Look at what king David and king Solomon did and Paul even called out Peter a few times on his mistakes. Love and forgiveness is the most important gifts Jehovah give us. It’s a daily walk. As a Christian the way I see it is except Christ, love people and forgive people regardless of what they do that’s more important than being religious. Jehovah is very clear on these 3 things and IMO that’s what will get you to heaven. I’m not a Bible scholar roam this is just the way I see it when I read scriptures.
Southern, I've never met you in person but in my eyes you are one of the nicest ( if not thee nicest ) and most genuine people on this forum. As they say in the land of FD....fugget bout it.
Man, do we ever need to get back to football.
You are being too hard on yourself. You have a good heart, that’s what matters. The point being made that day wasn’t about your comment, it was about inconsistencies on the board.

That's awesome, great way to look at things. To me if you're religious... Great! If it makes you happy and you treat others well. If you aren't? Great! If it makes you happy and you treat others well. 😀
@southern-psu-fan the Bishop Mcdevit in Harrisburg is the one McCoy, Shawn Barowski and Ricky Watters to name a few have attended and that school isn't the one shutting down.
The Bishop Mcdevit that's closing is an entirely different school that's down in the Philly suburbs
huh Didn't know Philly was in the coal region. I know the in area around my grandfather farm, there were some open pit iron ore mines. Must be they got the coal to make coke and moved everything to Bethl'em to make steel or as Billy Joel sings, Allentown.
@southern-psu-fan...Yes its the Philly school ,closing down and as an avid, Notre Dame, and Philadelphia Eagles fan, I really appreciate Bishop McDevitt in Harrisburg, Ricky Watters contributed mightily to my teams success..
Ricky was a top shelf RB, but in his soph yr, when ND won the nat'l title, Lou Holtz switched him to wide receiver..as ND was well stocked at RB...Ricky performed admirably there too, before going back to RB in his junior yr..

“For who? For what?”
@lionbacker99...Amazingly, Ricky got away with that , which is virtually impossible in a city as passionate for football as Philly..I think it occurred after he alligator armed a pass in a 38-0 loss, in a 3-13 season...THat helped, but he also went on to have a fine three or so years in Philly, and for he most part, played hard..But for who, for what has never been fully forgotten in Philly..
Ricky always was something of a free spirit, and, at least in my opinion, not the easiest guy to handle from a coaches standpoint..But a helluva player..and one who showed up on gameday despite "for who, for what'..
