After starting the season 6-9, they are now 22-13-4 and have made it to the Frozen Four for the first time in program history! We play Boston University in the semifinal on April 10th.

Defense looks much improved

Our offense is still high octane, but our offense seems to be much improved this year. We've also swept 2 matchups in the Big Ten so far, and split the other 2. That's a big plus, considering we never seemed to be able to get sweeps last year. One game we'd play great only to have a letdown the next game and split. Happened way to often.

Need consistancy

In the first weekend, they play well the first night against Sacred Heart and almost lost the second night. This weekend they shutout Alaska 7-0 the first night and get shutout the 4-0 the second night. Every is game is important and counts in the pairwise. They need to start playing defense better. It's a 200-ft. game. Also, they're taking too many unnecessary penalties.

Transfer Portal

The transfer portal isn't just affecting football and basketball. PSU just added Clayton Phillips, former Minnesota defenseman, to the roster. He is immediately eligible and has two years of eligibility remaining. He was a third round draft pick of the Penguins in 2017. He is considered a top 20 prospect in the Penguins farm system.

I was wondering what happened to him. He had a pretty good freshman year and was dismissed by Gadowsky for violating team rules. Apparently, he straightened himself out in Britsih Columbia junior hockey and played three years at Providence. He seems to have potential as an NHL prospect.

Penn is trying to raise money for a hockey endowment. The article is confusing. The fundraising goal is extremely modest. It sounds like administration is more interested in supporting the club program than starting D-1 men's or women's programs. Penn had D-1 men's hockey from 1966 to 1978. Six ivies currently have D-1 men's and women's hockey, only Penn and Columbia don't. Penn plays club hockey.

Conference Realignment

It looks like a new round of hockey conference realignment. Seven of the ten men's teams are leaving the Western College Hockey Association (WCHA) It looks like the women's teams are standing pat. The seven teams are planning to form a new conference by the 2022-2023 season. The three remaining schools (Alaska-Anchorage, Alaska- Fairbanks, and Alabama-Huntsville) have been consistently low performing which hurts the pairwise standings of the other schools and has limited the number at-large bids to the NCAA tournament from the WCHA. Increased travel cost to these cost to these three schools is also a factor.

2019-20 Men's Hockey Schedule

The new hockey schedule came out yesterday. The nonconference schedule is kind of uninspiring: two-game home series against Sacred Heart and Niagara, and a home-and-home against Bobby Mo from Atlantic Hcokey; a home series against Alaska-Fairbanks from the WCHA; and single away games against Merrimack and UMass-Lowell from Hockey East.

No Frozen Four for B1G this year

With OSU and ND losing over the weekend, the conference has gone from three teams last year to none this year. OSU was struggling near the end of the season and ND didn't have the offense to keep up with UMass. It's time to start thinking about next year. Guy Gadowsky says he thinks most of the underclassmen will stay to complete some unfinished business. Barratt and Pavlychev are the two most likely to leave, we shall see.
